Went to the science and surplus store by me today and they had em for around $25. They were all ranging from 2-7mw and 500-700nm. Anyone ever mod these? With their shear size, I would imaging that they are tweakable without as much concern about heat dissipation.

Well, I once dissected a laser printer, finding a small diode with a big heatsink, but being rather noobish about electronics and LDs, I was not able to get it to work. It was anyways "just" about 20mW somewhere in the IR.

But try to find something to do with them, mod them or something! Still, I think even with 7mW and a huge heatsink, you won't get a 500mW overpowered burner :)
500nm would be nice, though, what is the lowest wavelength they can offer? If you might get an orange diode, that would be coolest.

a beter idea would be to take out the ir diode and place one of a dvd recorder in there

I looked but couldn't find this, Got a link?

Yes, the LD in a printer isn't going to be anything spectacular.

However, if the drum scanning optics are included in the assembly, they're PERFECT for line generation and the "Liquid Sky" effect.

Hook me up with some 500nm diodes if you get some... :-?

Please?

So, is it worth 25 bucks? They seem to all have a two pin connector and an additional ground. Which one is which?

But this is all their "off the truck" stuff....  99% of their store is misc used parts.  They have everything from WWII geiger counters to old telephones for technicians
*edit link Fixed* Kenom :)
