Default Laser beam change?

Looking into getting a Viper Series 980nm 400mW IR Laser Pointer and my biggest concern is the spread of the beam.
From what I'm understanding is to get a farther "focus" point I could buy a expander which would multiply the distance at which the focus point is.

But I wonder if I can address the problem from a different angle. IE can I change the collimation tube (the collimation lens) to achieve better, and quite possibly far better results? I'm figuring Light -> Base laser lens (sets the focus point) -> expander.
So if I can change said lens would it be logical? Or do people go beam expanders purely because either changing the first lens has little to no effect, or the price difference is just logical to add more glass to the laser.

Thanks in advance,
Lostman

PS. if my stupidity on the subject of laser physics is why I've over looked a major concept as to why I shouldn't even ask these questions, just point it out!

Figured IR would be a quite interesting choice! Does the NM have an effect on focus distance?

I've had quite a few cheapo ebay green red blues, but never really looked into the concept of a focus point, never noticed the spread of the laser light. My understanding was it was like a ruby rod laser, (which could be completely wrong) that it took the light to near 100% straight, so a 2cm dot at 5m away was the same size at 5000m away.

Not really into the burning thing after my exploits as a kid with my magnifying glass

I have a set of rather old, but still sees IR light cameras. I've stumbled across CNI lasers and I'm seeing a much different story when it comes to divergence 1.5mrad is what 10x better?
My goal is to hook up my telescope "its old and not great" but should work hooking it up to my camera and having quite a interesting time being able to see things at pitch black from like 300 to 400feet + away.

EDIT
980nm ir 1000mw laser
Found this for quite a decent price, any suggestions as to power for night vision? Still my main question is on the basics of focusing.

I see no reason why a TRUE 50mw green laser wont work. For the price of that IR laser you could buy a TRUE 100mw+ greenie. You should see pretty 50mw good.

15mRad is VERY bad.... That would mean it is almost like a flashlight. 1.5mRad however is VERY good.

Really now, see that was what I was figuring with the 15mrad, but if 1.5mrad is very decent at least I know I don't have to try and chop change the lens
