improving aixiz module for diodes heatsinking

So this is a easy way to improve the ability to heatsink diodes.
One of the main problems is when we press in diodes they cant be removed and are not heatsinked on the back side of the diode.
That is a large surface that is left open.
This new way makes it non press fit.
This will also show my modded aixiz module to hold 9mm diodes.
Here is an image of the setup apart.

Here is an image with the 9mm 445nm diode.

this is them put together.

thanks wanted to find a good way to hold this diode and this seemed like the best way.

Very nice Kiyoukan, I was designing a hs for a similar application , it would be better if the aixiz back is completely eliminated and replaced with a beefier copper back with tighter threads and a hole for wires.. That way much more stable pen builds can be made!!

I was looking to get something like that made in mass but found the cost was not worth it and this solution was super cheap and works almost as good.
And being so simple it would not be that big of a pain to make out of copper.
But it does need modifications to the aixis housing to work.
You need to make sure the diode stick a tiny bit out the back.
So just a simple and quick lathe operation.

Oh i see!! It would definitely cost more than that, great work :gj:

I wish there was a way to do this with the 5.6mm cans, there is simply not enough room on the back with the leads there to safely do it.

There is, if you make a 4mm hole for the wires that is plenty of room for wires plus heat shrink.
And it gives you 0.8mm around on the back side of the diode for thermal contact to the aluminum.
And you get the nice ability to just remove the diode by unscrewing the 2 pieces as its no longer press fit.
If i were doing super high 2W 445nm builds even with the 5.6mm cans i would suggest to do this its cheap and over doubles the thermal dissipation of the aixiz module.
Just remember to use thermal paste to make sure it contacts the housing as best it can.

Ponticg5 actually had some small caps that fit the rear of the copper modules he was selling.
There was a mention of it here > http://laserpointerforums.com/f44/copper-plating-aixiz-modules-graphs-added-67632-2.html

Though I did not get the time to take him up on the offer to test it, they look promising as they
fit to the rear threads of the module and tighten down.. Quite small as well.

Those look nice i wonder what he would have charged for them.
Im buying alot of copper aixiz modules as of late as i just love them so much.
So now that i can add this to them they are even better and should give our diodes much longer life.
I also love the fact that if the diode dies i dont need a special tool to remove the diode.

He said they were originally made to support the driver or something to that effect.
Not sure if he still makes them, but dont think he would charge much for them.

Im sure if you drop him a PM the interest may spark another run on the CNC...

Nifty and nice solution. +1
I will probably do something like this on my third build, but I am not done with my second yet.

I have one of the o-lke housings for 9mm diodes, but the diode fit is so loose, you would need to made something like kiyoukan's insert to hold the diode in place.
