Yes, that's perfect. Put your meter on the highest ma setting and make sure you have your probes plugged into the right place on the meter. Take the meter reading and let us know.

hey chido after i get the results from DMM, i divide it by the resistor value that i use, right?

hi guys do you think its ok if i used 10ohm combined parallel with 4.3ohm resistor in the driver to have a good current limit?  :-/can you tell me again the estimated current output can be on this setup? :-X i just want to be safe even if i max my trimpot adjustment to low resistance, thanks.

You don't have to divide your voltage by the resistor's resistance if you did it Gazoo's way.
A 10 ohm and a 4.3 would give you a total of 3 ohms resistance, which would let 400mA of current through. If you want to drive your diode with more current then use a 8 and a 4 ohm resistor, that limits the current to 450mA, so if you max out your pot you'd be leting through 450mA.

chido what would be your suggestion for the safer current enough to light matches, pop balloon , cut black tape, with well life of diode? please indicate the resistance, thanks.

I really couldn't give my opinion since I haven't messed around with an open can diode. Gazoo said it was 400mA, and I saw jayrob say 420mA, if I was in your place I'd go with 400mA, that'll be more than enough to burn things since your laser would have an output of over 200mW, 20mA more wouldn't really make a difference in power, but they would make a difference in diode life.
So long story short, just use the 10 and 4.3 ohm resistors you have, you won't have to use the pot because to get the 400mA out you'd have to completely max it out, but you can leave it there if you want to.

ok thanks chido for updates, maybe tonight i will began to build the final setup for DVD laser, then post again picture, or maybe video. You gave me a reason to get here, i thank you a lot by that [smiley=thumbsup.gif], without a helpful guys like you, im nothing but a crap builder ;)

Ok man, you are welcome.
Now enough with the compliments. ;D
And dude, you are DEFINITELY NOT a crap builder. ;)

yeah specialy Gazoo, thanks man.. for everything, you both guys are great i never been built this great things like this lasers, i never thought that my ideas about laser have possibly expand, im proud that i have the people who can help me in this hobby. Actually here in our country, people never realize that this kind of laser experiments and gadgets exist. anybody here in my place who saw my bluray and my green laser, go nuts with it they always ask me how i did it, i said , just research , read references and the big help from the person who have lots of experience on this matter, like you guys. [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

Anyway, apologise for the long complements, a big thanks to you guys [smiley=vrolijk_26.gif] ;D

adgmeijin, thank you.. :) I do get a lot of satisfaction helping others and I do the best I can with what I have learned. So I am trying to pass it all on. I think I will always be excited seeing others build their first working laser, and I always smile when I read posts that someone has accomplished it.

I will never forget my first laser, ...just a diode connected directly to batteries...lol. I was amazed it would burn tape. Then I decided to try one of those lenses that comes with those micro security cameras. So I placed the diode in a pair of helping hands, and taped the lens to an old battery pack. Then I lined everything up and had my very first laser... ;D And I was awestruck by the beam...I will never forget it.

I have come a long ways since then thanks to what others have taught me, and yes I also research as I go along. I am still learning, I learn something new here almost every day.

you're alwys welcome guys, like a computer,we need to upgrade our brain to produce a new output, we also need a good programmers to provide the compatible data like the seniors here who knows every corner of the matter. like you gazoo and everybody here was still learning cauz every day of our life new things came along or some are accidentally discovered, so at that point no reason why people here dont know what to do in some little or big things, i believe every member in this forum is genius scientist that keep discovering what's possible to happen here on earth. i wonder if the law of visible light can be arrange on what to be the first color and what's next.... nothing is impossible if you just believe... ;)

Re: im using LG 20x DVD burner diode

guys here now my short clip of finished DVD laser project i dont know how much power it throws :-/, the adjustment resistance was 3ohms like chido says, apologize to my video quality, i just want you to know i have success on this. ;) ;D

Yup, you have success. ;D
Did you use your multimeter to see how much current you're drawing?
