As long as you have the diode connected to the driver, you have to test it with the two batteries, if you test it with one only it won't be even close to its full capacity. I don't know how you got 270mA, but that measurement is clearly wrong.
You can't calculate mW, you need a laser power meter.

ok chido in your calculation, what would be the actual mA and mW of that using 1pc. rechargeable cr123 (3.6v / 600mAh)? i think i read the DMM reading wrong :-/ please give me the idea for this...
im planning to order Laser power meter by next month i need to save bucks for that.

If you test your LD with just one cell I'd say the maximum mA you could get would be about 60, and I'd guess the laser would be about 5mW, maybe less. You need to test it with the two batteries.

I don't know how it stings your skin, even a 150mW laser can't do that, you need to put black marker on your skin in order for it to sting.
If you test it with the two batteries it's going to get really bright, a hell lot more brighter than your bluray.

so you mean the brightness is not yet on the top? :-/what was the maximum mA for that LG 20x DVD burner diode and maximum mW the best diode life can get? ohh.. that's why my bluray is much brighter than my dvd laser.. :-?

chido another question why i felt sting in 2ft. if my LD output was 5mW or less, why its so bright at point of 5mW or less compare to some cheap red laser? can explain this or anyone? thanks.

It was 400mA and like I said you can't calculate mW, you need a laser meter, every diode is different and just because one gets x mW doesn't mean the other one will get the same power when running at the same current.
Oh and it's supposed to be so bright it'll hurt your eyes a little bit if you shine it at a white surface. ;D

yes actually i put a black marker and it stings, so you mean at 150mw it doesnt stings without the black marker? :-/

Yup, even at 150mW it won't sting unless you have dark skin or you put black marker on, and focuss it down to a little point. For some reason the skin absorbs all the light.

ok i see, you have a point on that, any way you're right when you say "it will hurt a bit my eyes because of reflection when i point it in white surface", this time i can look at it reflection when i point it to white surface....i think the laser is not yet on the top output, right?

Test it with the two cr123 rechargeable batteries, and take a picture when you're doing it. Include your multimeter too.
Don't point it at a white surface when you do this, it'll be bright as hell.

Ok man I'm going to explain it one more time.
1. Take the positive wire going to your diode and cut it.
2. Use some scissors or knife to cut away some of the plastic from the split wire so that the copper wire is showing.
3. Take a 1 ohm resistor and place it between the positive wire comming from your driver and the other positive wire going to your diode.
4. Now take your multimeter and set it to mV.
5. Place the red prove between the resistor and the driver, then place the black probe between the resistor and the laser diode.
6. Turn your pot to the maximum resistance.
7. Connect the batteries and start turning your pot the other way looking at the multimeter to watch the current.
8. Stop when your multimeter reads 400mV.

You can measure the current between the power source and the driver. You will get the same readings as you would if you were measuring between the output of the regulator and the driver. The 1 ohm resistor deal that chido explained is great for a permanent solution, but for a quick measurement you can do as I suggested. If you don't know how to use your DMM I suggest you google it. There are countless of resources available on the Internet.
