Don't get me wrong.. I'm not doubting any information presented here. I'm just trying to help by tossing my personal experience in the data pool.

so at 250mA we were at the way other "down-slope" side of the curve?

I started a thread over on <alt.lasers> about my latest 'brick' pointer.

A poster there suggested the Sony diodes we've been getting from Greg may not be the SLD1236VL (here:http://www.sony.net/Products/SC-HP/cx_news/vol37/pdf/sld1236vl.pdf) but rather they may be these diodes:http://www.zet.biz/Laser/data/SLD1239JL.pdf

Looking at the product code on the side of my diodes I see "5HJL" "0058", whereas the product code for the 1239 is listed as "xxKL" so these may not be it. Then again the SLD1239JL does end in "JL" so they could be what we've been using. Someone look at their diodes and post the product code.

It would be nice to see a 'real' datasheet for the 1236VL, including the markings on the can to identify it.
My 3 are

5HJL
0058

like yours

darn man, we need to inform senkat of this...

but hey, im in love with these "open can" things for now...

and once again, is 250mA on the right side (aka "downhill" side) of the power curve for these diodes?

No one can possibly know for sure. At first it seemed like the codes Kenom posted meant something, but then knimrod posted something different. Seems like it was safe to run the first couple of batches Greg received with 250ma's. I think it is the latest batch that is in question. But I don't know for sure.

sorry to jump in the discussion like this, but whendo you think this "possible bad batch" from senkat started to appear?
I ordered/received 2 of his diodes in mid/late December 2007.
First one worked fine at 224mW 288mA for about one weak. ( blew it with eccidental 340mA for few seconds)
Second one still kicks good at 276mA 200mW.

joust for the record.

I bought two GB diodes in September, both killed by the Dorcy.
The number on one of them
5HJL
0451
the other one I turned it to an open can LED. ;D

Looking through a 10x triplet I noticed the Laser crystal on the GB diode is smaller than a 16x DL diode.

I ordered one preinstalled in an aixiz housing on the 30th of November and it shipped on December 1st. Got here in mid December. I still haven't tryed it and I can't see the number since it's in the module, I just hope it isn't one of the really bad ones. :-/

It's too bad this issue got started in two different threads...

The LDs I received in mid november were all marked:
5GJL
0155

I think the "5G" is the date code and corresponds to: 2005, July. "0155" is the lot code.

greg has been notified.  He's inquiring from the retailer and has gotten a few responses back  Namely a few things about the codes on these diodes.  I'll post directly from the response from the retailer.
I shipped it from SLD1236VL box.

Please verify code in diode CAN.

AAJL -- AA mean Year and month, JL is SLD1236Code

XXXX -- Lot No.

If JL it mean  SLD1236VL.

Now I've remain only 1 box SLD1234VL therefore I sell it as 2pcs lot.

And the other is SLD1239JL.

I don't know is it differ lot by lot or not.

Please compare code first.

so greg is working on finding out what's going on with these. What I'd like to know is how they figure if the diodes say JL it means they are sld1236vl's???
makes no damn sense to me.

It is great to learn Greg is looking into it. Thank you Kenom, I can read and understand the response without any trouble. But I too would like to know how he can claim he is selling VL's when JL is clearly stamped on the diode. He says "If JL it mean SLD1236VL."....lol. Ok, I admit it, I can't translate that part of his response. ;D

hmm,ive been away from the site for a couple of weeks, but from what i understand some of his shipped diodes can't be considered *safe*,since we don't know their specs/they get busted even though it should be safe,am i right?i got a diode from him back in December, and it burnt trough after around 5-10minutes of use, even though the circuit was protected... :( I have no way of checking the model number, since a (pretty slow) teacher currently is evaluating my damn weak red laser w/ daedals circuit...
