about a month ago I found this on DX:
DealExtreme: $1.81 0.5mW Red Laser Pointer Pen (2*AAA)
this would be the cheapest pen-style host
originally, I was going to remove the old module and driver and put there na aixiz module with a PHR or LPC diode + rckstr driver and power it by 2 10440 batteries. but when it arrived, I realised it's for AAA batteries and aixiz module is too big to fit there.
so now, I'm thinking about to take out the pen's module, harvest the old diode from module and place there a PHR/LPC (I hope it has standart 5.6mm diode) and rckstr driver (or the AMC7135 chip @ 350mA for LPC; this would need only 1 10440 - a spacer will be required)
now, there's only 1 thing to do, and I don't know how: remove the old laser module, without damageing it

so, any ideas?

edit: or maybe use driver like this

I bought a couple of these hosts, 5mw version though. Honestly...looking at the build I would highly recommend a different host. You will have no heatsinking for your higher power diode.

Adding to this, I believe that the module is glued into the host making harvesting practically impossible without cracking the host open.

I know it won't have good heatsinking, so it will have limited duty cycle
OR, make it with weak diode (7mW 635nm, KES400A bluray etc.)

Well that is an option. To be honest I am not a fan of the host. The main problem still remains though, how to get the module out of the host without ripping it apart.

If you solve that, then you could by all means make a nice pointer out of it. Another option for the host would be the mini-green modules o-like is selling, I am pretty sure one of those would fit directly in the host and you could use a single 10440 batt.
