Chimo -
SUPER PICTURES -- I can't do that with my Kodak.
Are you cropping the pictures with a photo editor ?

Thanks Mike. These are cropped using an older version of ACDSee.

i did the same thing to my diode cuz i thought it was useless as well. well i just used a file to get the can off and ill be trying to get it to look like urs. i got my 800 dollar canon digital rebel xti a few days ago so i dont know all the features like macro and stuff but i do know that close ups do NOT come out very nicely... ill try to get one up right now
add: either i have the luck of the devil or i destroyed this thing long long ago. i just dropped it from a height of 4 feet and it survived, well at least it still lights up like it did b4 i dropped it lol. gonna try and get a pic of it now.

camera just cant get these close ups... just compare the two lol
mine: http://www99.epinions.com/Canon_EOS_400D_Digital_Camera_with_18_55mm_Lens/display_~latest_prices
his: http://www99.epinions.com/Canon_Pow...arch_vertical_~all?search_string=canon%20a620

photography im not even gonna start comparing. for all u laser fans go for his, if u want to look cooler (and nerdier) and get those nice image landscapes, get mine lol... only go for the $600 not the $800 i got lol

You may need a different macro lens to get really close shots. The ability to change lens to suit the job is one of the great characteristics of SLRs. Fortunately, the A620 will focus down to 1cm with its non-changeable lens.

Thank you for the pics and the tips! You just helped me recover a 250mW red with a blown window and all pins broken off!

I have the rebel xti too (Eos 400D here in Europe). The kit lens is somewhat poor for a SLR camera lens and can't be used for macro photography (it's still better than handhelds though). If you want to do serious macrophotography buy a suitable lens (for example this or this)
A cheaper alternative would be buying extension tubes (the same trick handhelds use for macro) or an inverter ring for your lens, i've seen it done and works great.

Good point about heat dissipation chimo. It would be nice to know why the open can diodes hold up better than the closed can diodes....there is a big difference in the design somewhere. Maybe it is the LD chip and this is the sole reason.

But I have often wondered why they were made open instead of closed....was it to cut costs or is there something else going on with this we don't know about?

I would think open can do better with heat because it does not have the can on. The can is closed and there is air inside of the can. Having air enclosed in the diode that is not circulated acts like an insulator and helps to hold heat.

Oh and man you can take some awesome pics, Cheers. No way my Kodak will ever take pics like that :'(

Cropped and resized, the third big pic in the thirteenth posting is now my background :)

Man, I love those Hi-Res pics! Or "moar" as 4chan would say now?

Still, it gives you an illusion about those wires going onto the diode bar - looks like these would be decent wires, but considering the relation pin - wire, one soon realizes that this wire is just a peace of cr*p.

Regarding open/closed can - they are in a fairly well sealed environment so I'm not sure there would be much air movement over the diode for cooling. The lack of a can, however, allows them to use a larger pedistal which would help heat flow.

That bond wire is "golden".

Thanks for the pic comments. Here's a new one.

I removed the can on my ld's very easly... just a simple matter of carefully putting i in a vice then taking a dremel on the slow speed, took me like 30 seconds to do.

I got lucky too because i was holding it looking at it when it dropped 5 feet onto concrete and still lived lol.

...lazer... ;D ;D ;D
