how do I install the diode in the aixiz module ?

HERE's how ! ;)

COMPLETELY disassemble the Aixiz module first....you should not leve the lense in whil doing this - it iwll ruin the lense.......

Take the diode, place the pins through the small hole in the back end of the Aixiz module. Now, place the emitting side into the front end of hte Aixiz module - dont try to push it in with your hands, you are NOT that strong !

Next, place your diode "sandwich" (hopefully not pre-toasted) and place it into your VISE...you can substitute a clamp, or various other "squeezy type" things here, but I recommend a vise ! EVEN I CAN AFFORD ONE ! ;D

Now, slowly tighten the vise, while holding your sandwich together - make sure you have it remotely straight....and do not pinch your fingers - it hurts !

While you are tightening it, you will notice it is squishing the diode into the module really easy. If you are taking more than 30 seconds to do this. you are being WAY too cautious ! It should only take a few turns of the vise to insert the diode completley in there ! I will make this a sticky so EVERYONE can find it :)

Hey, great post, this will be really helpful when the time comes. How much strength do you say it would be needed for this, cause I'm thinking on buying a small plastic vise that could do the job and it's nice for electronics.

Get a real metal vice, you can get a decent cheap small one just about anywhere. A plastic one would probably break. Oh yeah, and make sure the vice you buy is wide enough for the module... :)

Ok, thanks for the tip, I'll buy a small metal one. But sometimes it's difficult to get some things over here (Argentina), so I try to use what I can get :p

Well even a wood clamp would work better than a plastic vice. I hope you find something..

thanks guys, this technique is great! I got my vise for $10 USD; so they're pretty cheap.

By the way, you could also use a pipe wrench; nice, easy, and ubiquitous.

Hey Greg:
It's a moot point now since I've toasted the diode but with Kenom's help, I'm trying to determine the cause. I used your vice technique which IMHO is the safest and easiest way to do this. When I was finished however, all around the periphery of the device I could see that the LD flange was not perfectly flush with the module but up about the thickness of very thin cardboard. Is this OK? Thanks.

I doubt that was the problem, though :( I have had some that were in CROOKED before I learned the vise trick...I was using lat edged screwdrivers and a hammer - don't ask LOL !!

Re: how do I install the diode in the aixiz module

yeah I doubt that that was the problem either. Making sure that the diode is flush with the casing only allows it to be sure it's centered and the light from the diode goes right to the beam. I've noticed when those are installed "off" they have a different beam as not as much light is directed at the lens. Now along those lines I've been thinking that removing the can will also allow more light to escape the diode thereby increasing the output power.
