Out of curiosity...DVD drives use red diodes. DVDRW drives use high powered red diodes.

What strength diode would be present in the reader drives? I see them, all the time, in the broken drive pile.

The "reader" diodes are about 3.5-15mw max....I posted earlier different numbers, but loooked and found these numbers to be accurate.

if your only looking at making a simple laser pointer and not a very bright one.  then go ahead and use the diode you have.  A dvd rewriteable must be used for a high power red.

Follow the directions at this link to make your own laser.

now what?, i have harvested everything now

Any chance you can post a pic? (set your camera to macro mode)
Many DVD drives are different and its hard to try giving you a generic answer. Its possible you have one of those tricky setups where the diode is not in a can, and from what I hear those are pretty much hopeless.

I've updated the original instruction to complete the walkthrough of the diy red laser.

Twisted - have you read the various walkthroughs available on the site ? If you harvested diodes from a CD drive, it is virtually pointless, as there is very little power to be had from those diodes.

To answer your "Now What" question - now, you put it all back together, and go get a dvd writer !

You can get cheap DVD writters via the web - check www.pricewatch.com for the best deals !

get a 16x or higher - and hope you do not end up with an "open can" diode.....

Okay - now you need to get an appropriate housing to put all the parts in ! I suggest getting the empty chrome housings from Aixiz on Ebay - they are worth the price !

The rest of the "DIY" is outlined in many many many threads on here - take a read, and then ask specific questions about the parts you do not understand....that is if you want to build it yourself - if you want someone to build one for you, then there are folks on here that could use the extra bucks, I am sure !
