That would be nice and shiny, and cool too! (+ Toxic - But what would be worse, the laser or the mercury ;D )

Hmmm mercury....I have a lb of that around somewhere...no, I think I will give that one a miss :)

I think I have come up with a way of making the multi facet cone, I brushed up on my maths and came up with chord lengths and so on.....into the breach once more.... ;)

@ Steve, the trouble with all the ones in the links on your second post is the steep angle, for ease of manufacture you need to be a tad over 45 degrees, all of those would diverge the output in a big way.....I had looked at various sites myself and decided it would be easier to make one.

If I am going to make this work I need to scale it up in size, my facet one @16mm dia sends the beams all over the shop :-/.........it was a bit Heath Robinson so I am not that surprised... I now need to source some 2" Dia aluminium bar to do my next attempt.

There is an inconsistent, variable set of such things at American Science and Surplus.

@ danq, I will have a look....

In the mean time I have had a thunk....as you do....

New idea, I have a number of prefocus modules, I intend to mount them around a central module. Although not shown on the drawing the outer ones will each have a fine adjust screw to line up with the central beam. The cone (had to get a cone in somewhere:)) will operate via a trigger with a spring return to swing the outer ring of modules to bring the beams together at various distances. Theouter modules will be held against the cone with a large rubber band...or something similar.....

Hmmm... maybe a rubber o-ring, in a small groove, instead of rubber band - you're going to want more stability and spring than the rb would give. And again for stability, how 'bout putting a threaded hole through that cone, and use a screw/knob to adjust?

But even with that, won't you have a heck of a time trying to get those beams to actually align consistently in 3-d with this? Lateral stability still seems chancey.

You might have to put longitudinal grooves on that cone, to give the laser tubes guidance. or something.

:-? maybe instead of the cone (sorry!) use something like a camera iris, so your "focal" length is changed by a mere twist? The lasers (or "sockets" for them) could also be mounted on small hinges at the rear end, which would give them lateral stability both ends.

@danq, I quite agree, the drawing is simplistic, to make it easy to understand I decided to leave off a lot of detail. The holder will need milled slots to give lateral stability to the modules but allow them to swing radialy....early days on this as I only dreamt it up late last night.... The iris idea is rather elegant but I think for simplicity I will go the cone route to start with.

@ chimo, can't say I know the movie but I get the idea...:)

just found a nice diagram of an iris... might be easier to make one (or
duplicate its function) than to pay for a big one...

it seems like you could just do something with the laser cases to make them rotate in/out with a twist, if mounted right... could figure that out in a few minutes but really need to get back to work, gonna be in trouble otherwise!
