I turned my heatsink up today at work for my 100mw red Module. I made it out of 2" Ally bar and added some fins along the length to give a greater surface area for heat Dissipation. It is not a transition or press fit but rather a "snug" fit, so I can remove the diode without damaging it. It seems to work really well, I did a 2 hour test run and removed the diode. It wasn't even warm

Here is a picture or 2

Very nice ! I may ask you to turn one out for me soon :) Since I stumbled across the great deal on the portable reds, nobody is interested in the labby models now :) !!! I plan on making a permanent enclosure for the power supply soon....excellent work !

Sure thing Greg. Ill spin you one up. I plan on making one for my 35mw wicked Greenie, to see if I can make that 100% duty cycle too.

It would only cost about £7-£10 depending on the weight to Texas ;)

I've got a plug of aluminum that my father just gave me and was looking at making some spacers/heatsinks/ for the modules we are using for the DIY reds. If i shipped you the rod of aluminum can you do the same thing in metric specs?

Betcha that thing would work even better if those fins went down a bit more. Increase the amount of surface area on the outside surface and it's heat dissapating will increase. I've got a Zalman cooler for my Processor that is one huge assembly of super fine fins.

Are you doing this on a metal lathe? God I so want one of those. wonder how much they cost.
Off a searchin I go.

Using a Colchester Mascot , yep I can make the fins smaller and deeper , but I went for mass over surface area. The diode I made it for is in a heavy 18mm solid brass can. This was a first attempt at Turning a heatsink, so I went for simplicity, rather than overkill. The diode is stone cold after 2 hours running so I guess it works ok.

Will send you a PM soon Ken.

I've tested the heatsink with brand new lithiums and my 125mw DL Viper I used the batteries until they died. The laser did not get warm at all and is still working like new. The output during the test held steady at 120mw after it's initial burst of 135mw, this sat at 135mw-130mw for half an hour then dipped to 120mw for most of the test. The batteries lasted about 2 hours.

Fantastic job Jason ;)
