Just a little insight into the internals of a Plasmon UDO Drive, the following pictures will show you the incredible engineering that goes into these drives.
You will see the laser is mounted remotely of the carriage and a intricate set of prisms and lens transport it to the disk.

Im guessing this is a bluray burning diode but am not sure so any comments are welcome.

I plan to use this diode in a DIY build using the DDL driver (33ohm resistor?) and 7.4V LiPo or 11.1v LiPo

I will be trying out the lens that is attached to the diode, it looks like it a good en!

This is my first build so it will be a little slow.

Heres the drive before I start

Heres a picture of the carriage, at the bottom is where the laser beam goes through a lens and onto the carriage.

Another view of the carriage with the diode mount to the far left.

Heres a picture showing the prism arrangement and laser lens. Dont know what the little device is to the right of the bottom prism?

The same again with the lens removed showing the diode.

......Build coming soon!

Wow, neat!

From what I've read those have some sort of 405nm laser in them, this could be interesting. Where'd you get that? Aren't those drives thousands of dollars?

Thank you for the wonderful pictures. That drive looks very well made... bearings for rail guides? Very nice.

How difficult is it to get the diode out of the heat sink?

Keep up the great work and please keep us informed.

Please post some macros of the laser diode, I'd really like to try and figure out what kind of diode these use... It's older technology, but it was really expensive for its day, and it looks like the diode is given really really good heatsinking, so who knows, you may have found a strange high powered bluray diode no one here has ever seen before!

OK, the carriage does indeed run on bearing loaded runners, I am planning on leaving the diode in the heatsink and modifying the heatsink as required by my host...when I have found it!

I will be desoldering the diode from the pcb today and will try and get you some more pics/info on the diode.

Looks awesome.

I'm waiting for that build, I hope it's next powerful 405nm LD.
