oh and do you have an exact part number or link to the small box you used?

oh and also jay where did you get your mirrors? they look really solid!

These are the same questions I asked rog8811! The box was hard to find. I ended up paying for over seas shipping. It cost me like $30 bucks to get it! But I really wanted to make one in that small box like rog8811 did...

Part # 504-710... 55mm X 55mm X 42mm:
http://gx.rs-online.com/web/search/searchBrowseAction.html?method=searchProducts&searchTerm=504-710

This was the 100 ohm pot that I used:
http://search.digikey.com/scripts/DkSearch/dksus.dll?Detail?name=309NPC101-ND

This one should work too:
http://search.digikey.com/scripts/DkSearch/dksus.dll?Detail?name=RV6N101C-ND

I don't have the part number for the knobs... You will have to search DigiKey.

The mirror is the 1/8" plastic stuff that you can get on e-bay. This is one of the trickiest parts of the build. You first cut a square, then using a small hand held belt sander, you can sand it round. Don't peal off the protective film, until you already have them mounted on the motors. They get dirty easily.

I had to buy a sheet of the stuff, so I can send you some of it...

damn thanks! thats expensive for shipping! maybe i will take the plunge and buy like 10 :)

then sell here for people that want them.

and once i start ordering parts and i buy another heat sink or 4 i will ask for some mirror material as well :)

okay jay just a few more questions when you say 100 ohm pot do you mean 100k ohm?

i coudlnt find any 100 ohm pots at any of the three stores i went to! :(

so im doing my build with a 100k ohm pot but when i did a few resistance tests it seems to only change at the last 1/4 turn of the pot.

my motors should be here wednesday and my mirrors monday :) im stoked i have built my spiro in a small 2 inch metal project box and i has my pocket pal type blu ray fit into a modded 1-1/4 fitting :)

and i'll be buying a empty circuit board like yours since mine also has to be pretty low :)

im going to be running 2 AAA on the top and pot on the left and not sure where the switch will be yet

I don't mind answering questions, but it feels like a threadjack because this thread, and awesome design is not mine...

rog8811 is the brains behind this project! I can tell you that I used a 100 ohm pot. The one that I linked above at DigiKey. I would guess that 100K ohm would be very different...

10kohms = 10,000ohms
100ohms =     100ohms

If you consider that the resistance track length is the same on each pot,  so the 100 ohm part of the 10k pot is just the last few degrees of turn. Does that help with the difference? go for a pot of 500ohms if you cannot find 100 ohms... I think I got mine from ebay.

[edit]I just found a drawing I produced to show how different a 100ohm pot is to a 1kohm pot, a 10k pot would be 10 times worse, I hope it helps visualise the problem :)[/edit]

@jayrob be my guest with the answers ;)

Look at those diagrams from rog8811! 'A picture paints a thousand words'!

Don't get me wrong... I like to help if I can, but as you can now see, rog8811 is the MAN! And I must thank you rog, for the help and advice that you gave me...

Awesome !
So in one word, there is only 2 motor in opposite face, and the same rotation of direction (the second is off center of the first). The first in front of the laser have a speed fixed, and the second can go slower or faster than the first with a potentiometer : that's how you get these nice spyrograph picture ? it seems to be to easy to be true !
I will try it ! :)

Correct on all counts :) I still think this is one of the best things I ever built, It gets used a lot and with a 100mw greenie in it it can do some serious long range patterns.

....Oh and thanks for the compliments above J & TSM ;)

for sure rog! im excited my motors will be here tomorrow and my mirrors came today! my case is all done and waiting on the motors i just need to drill the final hole where the laser will come out and project.

:) :)

definitely one of the cooler projects i have worked on!

once my 500mw labby comes in i will point here through the box of spirals!
