got my bluray working!!!! but is this normal?

After days of percistance I finaly repared the pins on my bluray after breaking them whe installing them in its housing. i got it working but it has a weired green/yellow square aroung the dot, is this normal? also do they normaly have a visible beam or do people just put smoke in the room?

Are you driving the circuit with enough volts? If you are using the LM317 circuit you need a 9v battery. There are a couple of threads here about this strange look to the output.
Without smoke I can just see the beam on mine in a dimly lit room by looking along the length of the pointer towards where the dot is projected.

There is one other thing you need to consider, you may now have a zombie blue as you have no doubt subjected it to a lot of handling and heat, which these LD's, it seems, do not like.

I think the beam of a blu-ray is very visible at night, but 405nm is a funky wavelength for our eyes so different people see it differently.

Its dead :'(, ohh well this was my first build so i can learn from my mestakes. When i took another look at the driver i decided to measure amps and volts, it was at 7.6 volts and 1.2 amps!! Maby i shorted somthing in the driver, it was fine when i tested it before i hooked the diode up.

maby i read it wrong, maby it was 120ma but even that is enough to kill a diode

A 9V battery can supply 1.2A......... for about 4 seconds ;D

Sorry to hear you killed the diode, though not many people get it on the first try. Better luck next time if you decide to try again, they truly are amazing when they work....
