Not sure about the power - lucky thing you didn't toast your eyes ! Do yourself a favor- grab an IR strip at rat chack - they are pretty cheap - it's a card that shows up with IR light....point the diodes at that first, and always start with lower voltage first ;D It'll save the diode, and might keep a fire from happening ! What brand and model laser printer was it ? That might help to narrow down the diode used....

u r pretty sharp, Senkat. i've had one of those cards in my wallet for a long time now. i was lucky tho, bacause back then i knew there was light ya can't see, but who woulda thought there was also LASER light u can't see? back then i got into a lot of trouble w/ my projects. (some anyway) when my Mom got a new microwave oven i took the old one apart and was trying to make coffee from across the room. lucky i can still make babies! (never could make coffee past about 4 feet) if memory serves the laser printer was from Hewlitt Packard, and i never even THOUGHT about burning as it was only about 3 nites of fun before i cooked it.

Holy crap, we GOTTA be related ! ;D You have got me ROLLING ! Well, when my HP dies, I'll be sure to dissassemble, and look out some diodes

I can't wait to hear of someone rip a playstation 3 apart and build a blue laser ;)

I will if they start selling them for what they are worth

Hey SenKat, do you know if it matters what company makes the DL DVD drive, or do they all have 5.6 mm diodes?

I am looking to make one of these babies, and I am hoping that I can turn a wooden or acrylic case on my lathe. ;D

So far the DVD diodes are 5.6 mm cans. I got my red rebuilt but don't know how much mA to put through it. SenKat has one with CW output of 177 mW but I'm afraid to go 650 mA.

Did you follow felusmages' instructions for the driver board ?

DOOD ! You have a LATHE ? We need to talk, my friend ! ;D Provided it would be a good deal for you, I would be willing to swap some stuff for a custom made case on your lathe...acrylic, - or can you do aluminum ?

LOL, I should be able to do aluminum. I have seen aluminum turnings before, and they don't seem to be hard to do.

I have ordered the things I need to build this DVD laser, so let me do some testing, and I will get back to you on it. I would be happy to turn some cases for you. :)

I looked over the plans again and have mine running direct on two e2 cells. I need a third cell to get more power but mine is voer 40 mW because my new watt meter pegs out !!! Now to find a beam splitter.

I have my leadlight and the Aixiz module ready for mine. Gonna buy the DVD+/-RW drive when I can and extract the diode. The only problem is I like my leadlight so I might just buy another one and have a red leadlight at ~200mW and a green leadlight at ~35mW.

seriously - the circuit from Felusmage is REALLY easy to make....you really would be better off with that one, man....that goes for everyone trying this. You can cut out the 3 position switch, and the LED if you want....but I would do the circuit, just simply because it limits the juice, and will save your diode in the long run. Go to CPF and look under the lasers section, King somebody is still selling JUST the diodes for $10.00 !!!! MUCH cheaper than a whole dvd burner, but then again, you get all the motors, and mirrors and stuff if you rip into it....

I built my red into a dead Leadlight. I had to do some machining for the heatsink/lens. It only holds two batteries AAA and that puts out a pinch over 79 mW. I'll build my next one into a three cell flashlight.
