Do you need a heatsink for a high powered red?

Hi all, I am planing on making a high powered red laser and I wasnt sure if you NEED a heatsink to run open cans and closed cans safely. also what is the max output for an open can with a glass lense (on an aixiz module) and the max output for a closed can using a glass lense on an aixiz module.

It depends on what current you're planning on running the diodes at. A long open can running at 420mA definitely needs a heatsink, but you could turn the current down so the diode wouldn't get so hot, but that would lower your output so the laser wouldn't be too powerful. Same thing goes for the closed can diodes. (except the part of running them at 420mA) ;D

The max output. That depends on how much current you're going to put into the diode. For a long open can, it pretty much depends on the current, for a closed can, it depends on current and what the speed the DVD burner where the diode will be taken from is. There will be a lot of differences between a 12x diode and a 16x diode.
Overall the aixiz glass lenses don't seem to let out more power than an acrylic lens with its back opened. Jayrob has gotten around 40 extra mW from an open can diode running at 420mA using a MEREDITH glass lens, but only around 3mW when using an aixiz glass lens. Look at this graph showing the performance of a short open can diode I sent to DL, it shows the diode's power with an acrylic and a glass lens. As you can see, the differences aren't so great. :(

What can be used as a heatsink, also what current should i be running a closed can diode at to acheve maximum power and what is the maximum power for a closed an at maximum curent.

For a heatsink, just grab a chunk of aluminum and drill a hole through it the size of the aixiz module, then press the module in with a vice. (it needs to have a tight fit)

And like I said, the maximum current depends on the speed of the burner where you get the closed can diode from, is it a 4x? 8x? 12x? 16x?????
You can't tell the output unless you have a laser power meter. :p

I was thinking about geting a 20x burner, are these more powerful?

Diodes from 18x and 20x burners are usually open can diodes. There are two kinds of open can diodes, long open cans and short open cans. Long open cans have a longer dye than the short open cans and the short ones have it shorter. Long open cans are more powerful and people are running them at a current of 420mA (as mentioned before) which seems to be a sweet spot for these diodes. In average they put out from 240 - 250mW using a regular aixiz acrylic lens.

Not sure, but as long as it's not a lite-on drive there's a possibility that it may contain a long open can.

Yes, the Sony NEC Optiarc 7190A is a long open can. Most of my MXDL builds, are made with that drive. I have also used the Pioneer 112D (no longer available), and the Pioneer 115D. All long open can diodes.

Oh so it's the same drive as the one in newegg. I new it was a NEC Optiarc somthing drive but I didn't know it was 7190. God I feel like a total dumbass.

You definitely should not feel that way chido. You seem to have amassed an amazing amount of knowledge! And the great thing about you is, your focus seems to be on trying to help others.
