Before I start: Daedal, this is an excellent mod. I am almost finished making my own, and it looks wonderful ;)

I have two questions though (which, I am sure were probably answered before). But you guys have been exceedingly friendly thus far, so please excuse my ignorance.

All that I have left to do is install the capacitor and the 1N4001 diode to the back of the LD and put it together. I bought the 47uF 16V capacitor electrolytic capacitor, but yours appears to be the disc kind. Does this make a difference? Also, I have been told that Electrolytic Capacitors are polarized, whereas the disc are not? How exactly should I solder this kind on (assuming it can be used).

Secondly, with the 1N4001 diode, from your home made laser diode driver diagram, it appears that all one has to do is solder the positive side to the negative lead to the LD, and the negative to the positive LD lead? is this correct?

Any help is highly appreciated.

Your cap will have a stripe down one side and that stripe will be marked with an -. That is the neg side (the neg side also has a shoter leg). The cap is wired pos to pos and neg to neg.

Yep that's correct

Any help is highly appreciated.

Hope that helps

Can anyone recommend me some CR123A batteries for this? They're 6 euro's (9 dollars) a piece here, so I think I'll get some from DX, and I wondered if anybody knew which ones perform well....

how important are the capacitor & diode? I just finished mine without them and it works well. Am I destroying my LD by not using them?
thanks guys.

I am going to build my first burner. i ordered my diode and aixiz housing from stonetec earlier this week. I have been on this site all week reading and learning about all this so I don't fry my diode when i get it. I want to make my own case for my burner because I am a fabricator with machining abilities but want a small compact driver. I came across this board. kaidomain.com/WEBUI/ProductDetail.aspx?TranID=2982 , it supports 4 - 18 volts input. Just wondering I anyone has an opinion on this if it is good for a laser. I dont know much about electronic components like this. Thanks

would a 500mw 808nm laser diode work in this set up?
I found some pretty cheap, and I have this whole driver working with a 200mW, 650nm.
Could simply swapping the diodes work here?

No a 500mw ir diode would need alot more current than that, and they would be multi-mode so they would have really bad beam specs, the dot would more more squarish than round and there just not very good for making a beam out off.

Hey all, Im gonna build one of these torches, and I pulled some of these out of an old TV tuner someone gave me, could you please verify if these components would work in the circuit? I think the cap will but what about these regulators? Could someone check to see if they are like the lm317? Thanks a bunch!

Actualy i think the cap wouldnt work very good since caps with higher value voltage ratings tend to absorb spikes at a slower rate.

So what about those regulators? And the cap is 47uf and 35V which is what SenKat's driver kit includes.
