Default Diode voltage and amperage measurement setup

Hello everyone,

I'm new in the hobby and would like to take some questions! :P

I did a setup with a regulated source, a red laser module, two multimeters and LPM. The diode is *16x LG DVD burner.

I use a multimeter to check voltage and the other I use to check the amperage.

I would to now the measurement uncertainty of the procedure?

And if you have a better way to measure the amperage in the diode ?
I took some pictures to better illustrate the procedure.

The only thing I would change is to put a 1 Ohm resistor into the circuit so that you can measure the mv drop across it (1mv+1ma), it avoids accidental breaking of the circuit if a probe wire comes off.

Nice idea rog8811!!! Thanks a lot!

I will put the resistor in my board! Two watts is ok?

With this way I can get more resolucion in my measurement! My multimeter is very cheap, and I can`t get good resolution and accuracy when I read up to 200mA.

I see you made a nice box for the power gauge

For current measurement, i think the 1 ohm shunt is preferable to connecting the ampere meter in circuit, though it will drop slightly more voltage than the internal 10A shunt. For optimum results you could use a 0.1 ohm resistor instead, though you'd have to multiply readings by 10.

I usually use 1 ohm as well, it's only a problem when you are working with battery powered drivers that are already on their absolute lower limit of tolerable voltage drop.

My only problem are the batteries. I can't find a way to keep them!! I just use DX rare magnets!

Other question...Can I use the 1N4007 instead 1N4001? I have many peaces here!!

The 1N4001 Diodes are rated at 1Amp @ 50Volts
and the 1N4007 Diodes are rated at 1Amp @1000Volts

As long as your circuit uses less than the a Diode's rated Amperage
and Voltage... you can use it... 8-)

The voltage drop may be a lilttle bit diffrent though. Not as bad as with shottky diodes with different rated voltages, but it could be minutely larger for the higher rated 1n400x series as well.

Anybody knows this red laser module?


New Wish Red Laser Module mod. R-400-1
I'm not sure about this potenciometers... I believe that one is to adjust the sensitivity and the other is to adjust the gain (voltage/amperage)!

I can adjust other parameters?
