You need to tap out the ball bearing rings and the rod going through the whole thing. The absolute best thing to use is a hammer and one of the rails from a sled. Just put it over something that isnt going to scratch it and raises it so they fall out. Such as a 20oz cap. The only tricky part is getting the ferrous ring off of the underside. After I got mine off i had to dremel it to make sure it was all gone.

And if you cant get it off of the actual hard drive case itself, you need to tap it out from the bottom where you see the peg. It should fall right out.

thanks ill give that a try i guess i wasnt hitting it hard enough lol i was trying to rip apart the ball bearings with my drill with little luck

lol, yes they are good mirrors. I just did it to one cause it looks cool. By the way, If you want to define the word annoying...See how long it takes to get every single smudge and fingerprint off of a hard disk platter :-X

oh i hate when the disks get smudges all over them but i clean mine in rubbing alcohol and then store them wrapped in micro fiber clothes like the ones i clean my glasses with the amount of hdd ive been asked to "dispose of" is just ridiculous never though of using the motor housing thing as a heat sink lol
