I was a little bored so I decided to chop my DX30 down to 1xAA size and run it off a Li-ion 10440.  :)

Nice idea :)

Just wondering, does the end cap on the end of the battery compartment just slide out?

I'm curious how well this keeps up though, with the bad regulation of dx pointers and initial voltage of lithium rechargeables it might take quite a beating in this configuration.

It slides out with some "persuasion".

Cool... now DX will take your idea and market it for a while ;D (and they should ;))

Thanx for sharing... :D

oohh nice idea man!! i reckon i will do that to my next DX actually, or turn it into a labby :D

Who knows..

If they make a housing this size for 10440 use, and replace the existing circuity with a decent 300 mA current source, the whole product would probably perform better than what they are selling now.

Perhaps we'll see a chinese assembly line with DX30's, hacksaws and AMC7135 chips soon enough ;p

Guess it works out fine.. but if you want to mod the circuit, this would be the ideal application for a AM7135 driver chip... perhaps with a little bypass resistor over the diode.

I've experimented driving the pump directly, and 300 mA seemed to be the optimal value.

That's not a bad idea! I have 10 of the 3-chip boards from DX that I have not had time to play with yet.

The IR LD had about a 1.83V drop at 242mA (running on NiMH). The draw with the 10440 Li-ion is around 360mA. The 7135 sounds like a good fit at that current. :)

Go give it a try :)

One thing though: when directly driving the pump in a DX20, i noticed it actually got dimmer going from 300 to 350 mA. I guess its just the pump heating up and missing the 808 nm drive band of the solid state, but is noticeable for sure... so it might be worthwhile to first test the optimal current for your laser head an then configuring a driver to match.

Would this work for a true 5mw to? Or since the ir diode is less powerful will this mod kill it?

And what kind of batteries are those just like energizer e2 lithiums? but a different brand, or are they like a different kind of battery than those?

It could work for any of them, HOWEVER, you do this at your own risk. The DX Lasers and not known for their robust composition - it could kill it.

The battery is a Li-ion (4.2V open circuit). The energizer e2 (1.7V open circuit) is not a Li-ion.
