Great. I am going to follow that circuit very closely. Just waiting for the parts to come in. Is that red thing just a spacer and the square block a 6mm tactile switch. I have those too but they are rated for 50mA. So I was thinking if it gets toasted the diode should not see more than 50mA. Looks like no space on the circuit board for a 1ohm sense resistor.

Thanks Rog, this should be the design I am looking for. The maximum diameter of the whole circuit is say 15mm??

Correct on the red bit, just a sleeve isolator on diode lead as it runs close to the push button frame.
I have left the diode legs long, at the back of the board, so that I can attach a 1ohm resistor in the circuit for setting up.

So far so good Rog..very nice... :) I think we will all be very happy with this configuration. One thing I did notice is the ma's increases just a little bit the longer the diode is running. So if you want to run it at 40ma's set your initial adjustment for ~37ma's. Your diode is better heatsinked than mine so you may not see a difference while you are monitoring the current. But please let us know. Thanks...

That is what we are using except the 100ma version which is the 78L05A.. ::)

Thanks for the invaluable advice Gazoo, I am going to do a bit more testing on mine today, lower the input voltage to see where it goes out of regulation, that sort of thing. I am a little confused in that with a 3v to 5v module attached I measured 3volts across the output....Why not the 5v which I measured at the regulator?
With luck I will work it out today

I did confirm as the diode heats up, the ma's increase but very slowly and not by much. I hope you get it worked out.
The first time I hooked the regulator up, I hooked the regulator up backwards... :p The input and output pins are the reverse of it's bigger cousin. Fortunately there was no damage to the regulator.

I don't know why you only measured 3 volts across the output...did you have your trim pot turned all the way to the least resistance?

Muddled thinking on my part Gazoo, I forgot it was working as constant voltage, (too used to the LM317 setup:)) the pot adjusts volts not the current. It was all working perfectly today.

Oh, I understand now what you were thinking. Yes it is true the pot adjusts voltage, but it is also acts to limit current. It's the same with the LM317 used as a current regulator, as current is increased, so is voltage... :p

So did you get the blu working yet? That's all that matters now... ;D

Still waiting for my blues, I have had notification that they are on the way...I will have a go at tracking them tomorrow:)

*Edit Due to having soldered the Aixiz module into my brass one access is limited, so I made a press tool today to insert the LD, I am ready to go as soon as they arrive. ;)

Running at about 40 mA, there isn't much heat to deal with. I've run mine to 55 mA for a short period but it does fun stuff at 45 mA.....

@Mike, I will bear that in mind, mine will effectively have a grossly oversized heatsink due to the way it is constructed, I doubt it will ever get warm:)

Well, The blue rays arrived and I am up and runnig:)

It is a bit dim at the moment as I am running on 6v, as soon as my rechargables arrive in they go...

I set it up at 45ma using 7.2v from my bench power supply to make sure it will be OK.
