cool dorcy Pics

After much confusion, I found that apparently the Dorcy mini and Jr. are the same? please correct me on this if I am wrong. Here are the pics:

i wonder why people like the dorcies so much.. theyre not cheap. ive seen lots of flashlights that look almost the exact same that sell for around $5 cdn

Idonno, I just think its cool or somehting, BTW can u link me some of these flashlights, as I am working on a IR laser flashlight project and that would help

Actually be aware that modification is now NECESSARY to do this. You have to install a resistor inline to prevent the laser from instantly poofing. I use a 5 ohm resistor. Initially the dorcy jr. (mini) was putting out exactly 350ma. Now however, they are putting out anywhere from 370-390ma. That does spell instant death. With the 5 ohm resistor it's bringing even the new one's down to about 200ma. Nice and long life!

So as the initial question was on the beginning of the thread and before the big pictures distracted me, the Mini, and JR. are both the same critter.

im not familiar with that battery type also. ive seen it for a few things, but never really investigated it. i have a flashlight i got for about $10 that has the weird little 3AAA cartridge type thing inside, which power 15 white leds, that looks a lot like that dorcy. im not sure what the size of those batteries are though so some sort of shim or something might be required to get things to fit properly if you specifically wanted that type. if the diameter is about the same as AA then ive already found a few others that would work just as well. i hear people saying go to radio shack? we dont really have those in canada anymore. they were bought by circuit city and are now called "the source" so im a little confused about that. they have a ton of neat pen type hosts for less than $10, also a few that resemble dorcys. unfortunately i dont have any money to spend and i dont have any diodes so i cant really see just how well these would work. couple single led ones that im sure would work great though.

can i pick up a 5ohm resistor at radioshack? :-/

i dont think they make 5 ohms resistors, if they do they would be hard to get, all you have to do is put two 10 ohms in parallel like twiest both of the wires coming from them together then there both letting 10 ohms thru and that means that it now equals a total of 5ohms.

4.7 is the nearest common resistance - that'd be fine. But then they probably don't sell 1W resistors at Radio Shack anyway, so 2 10 Ohm 1/2 watts may be better anyway. (I like Fry's Electronics myself if you happen to have one of those in town.)
BUT - measure the current yourself to make sure.
With my Dorcy and LD, 1 Ohm got me 250mA, but that's probably unusual.

YOu can find 10 ohm resistors at radio shack and do this...




I have used 3.2 ohm resistors too. 2.5 as well. they are available. Just search. I started calling stores and asked if there was places to buy stuff like that. I ended up finding a local hobby shop that carried electrical components.

I really should do that to my Dorcy =\ Then again I still need to get a washer to hold the module instead of the cannibalized lens.
