Circuit Question

OK, here's johnny.

If I was to build a DIY red, using either the GB diode, or one salvaged from a dvd burner

The point is to have say 4v of battery power, how many ma should the driver be pushing out?

I can build one, but schematics confuse me. So how many ma and how many volts should the driver be pushing out to safely drive a LD?

There are many postings answering this question. YOU need to decide what driver, diode and supply voltage will be used. We here can not build it for you.
Each driver method discussed has its own characteristics and 4 volts may not run a LM317 driver. Where do you get 4 volts ?? From 2 gel cells ??
How much the driver &quot;should be pushing out&quot; is up to your design and the LD.

Yeah that is something you have to decide. Using the LM317 circuit you can vary the current going to the LD. To be safe if you are not going to heat sink or TEC cool your diode then the comfortable lazing threshold is right about 160 mA. This way it will still burn nicely and not over kill your diode. Right now I am pushing 300 mA to my laser diode. But thats with TEC cooling.
