Cellphone Mod Idea. Possible?

I'm pretty new to lasers, and hoping to get at least a little more experience before i attempt anything like this, but it's a fantasy. My old cellphone has an LED torch that I can turn on & off using the phone. I was wondering, if I were to succeed in yanking off the cover protecting them (sounds like a job in itsself tbh) could I measure Volts, Amps & Resistance and then unsolder the LED and put in a diode driver w/ a diode and have it shoot a laser beam, or would it be more complicated than that?

If it is that simple i'll go ahead and do it, but are there any complications I should be aware of? I know that when applying heat poses the risk of melting some of the sillicon and stopping the phone working, but it's a risk i'm willing to take I guess.

If it's possible, tell me in as much detail as you can (be bothered) what I would need to do. Will post pics or anything else you want from the phone if necessary.

If it's a typical 5mm LED, the phone is only feeding it 4V @ 20mA or so - not enough to power anything 3b.

Lol... you guys are fun! I like this forum more & more...

Anyways, I posted it twice because I wasn't sure where it should go. So i posted it in one, then thought "no! wait! crap!" and decided to put it in the other too. But you guys caught me.

I got two phones i could do it with, one has 2 LEDs (rather not use that one though, it's more valuable, also idk if they're in series or parrallel) and another with only one (that's a peice of junk, not too bothered if it breaks). Isn't 4V enough? I got a greenie that runs on 3. What sort of ampage do laser diodes take?

Hold on. 4V X 0.002A = 0.008W, 8mW.

Does that mean I could power a 5mW (red or BR) pointer off it, or did I just say something stupid?

Also, with the one with 2 LEDs, if they're connected in Series i can double the Voltage and if they're in parrallel i can double the Ampage? Or the other way around? Either way, does that mean i can power something more substantial... or at least increase the chance that i'm able to power a 5mW?

4v x 2ma= 8mw, this is true but this is not the output power of the laser, since laser diodes are far from 100% efficient(meaning it would take much more then 8mw of input power to achieve 8mw of light). But power would not be your main concern, but practicality is...In order to achieve a laser beam, you need not only a diode, but a lense as well, this whole assembly will be protruding out of your phone rather awkwardly i would imagine.

Don't kill your precious phone, rather buy a module and host and make your own laser, this is more pragmatic and fun :D.

That wont work. I have tried that but the current is WAY to small. A 5 mw module takes 300 mA to operate. the led only operates at like 10-20mA and it wont fit.
