Default Building a DVD DIY Laser

Hey, I have just joined this forum and wanted to know a bit more about DIY lasers before I started.
First: Is a 16x Burner necessary, or is a 22x also suited for a first build. If not I shall purchase one
pre-installed in housing from stonetek. Stonetek org(can't post link yet) /shop/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=67& products_id=192

Second: Is a driver necessary? On cracked it did not mention a driver atall, which is where I first thought
of making my own Laser pointer. If so are there any recommendations?

Last: Is a maglite suitable for a build? I would prefer a slimmer base as I will likely carry it in the inside pocket
of my Blazer.

Anything else you should know: I'm based in the UK, ummm not much else...

Thanks,
/Dante

OK. That helped alot but has made me worry greatly about safety 8-)
Right, so as I understand it, I will need an LD a housing a driver(which I will need to configure).
Now I just need to choose a base, I will have a look around and post back, so that
you can advise me.

Thanks,
/Dante

Choose your diode/driver combination first. That will restrict which host you can use because of battery choice restrictions (or you have to be willing to "customize" a bit more).

Peace,

You're thinking of gutting a $50+ Fenix for your host?! I know I wouldn't lay a finger on mine!

You ought to first try building for a known host instead, and then move onto something like that.

Thanks, yeah, I thought it was a bit expensive...
OK so, I will get one of these(I think) hightechdealz com /index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=1&p roducts_id=2
And I will need a driver ,and a heatsink? Any *suggestions, links?(I am buying from the UK)

Also: For protection which of these would be suitable for a 20x 650nm 200+ laser?

Dragonlasers com /catalog/Red-laser-beam-protection-640-750nm--Laser-Eyewear-p-16255.html
or: Dragonlasers com /catalog/Red-laser-beam-protection-590nm-to-650nm--Laser-Shades-p-16254.html

Thanks,
/Dante

Get certified goggles from the forum post linked in my signature (I receive no commission or anything like that). Read the sticky posts in the tutorial and help forum. Some of the ads on the site, like the Darkhorse ads link to kits as well.

The DragonLasers goggles work fine for me. Maglites are generally aren't suitable, not enough space in the hotst. You might want to poke around at dealextreme.com to see cheap but nice hosts, but don't expect fast delivery! Dark_Horse's kits are also very good for making your own builds, but aren't cheap, and remember, you will need to pay UK import tax on top of that. A driver is necessary unless you do the maths really carefully, and remember that batteries aren't perfect! If in doubt, test it with an oscilloscope and test load (some diodes in series).
