I have been attempting to build the laser based on this video:
YouTube - Laser Flashlight Hack!
I have all of the needed parts and even extracted a diode from my old dvd/cd drive. However, I'm (very) new to this kind of build and I do not know how to test the diode for its positive and negative pins. I'm not even sure if this diode works because of my "less than gentle" removal process... Please help with this!

Welcome... You have come to the right place...

Whatever you do, don't follow that guys build!

Prepare yourself for a lot of reading and learning first. Or else you will only waste time and kill diodes. You could damage your eyes too.

Once you understand some of the basics, then others will help you.

They just don't want to answer really basic questions because there are thousands of those questions, and people get tired of answering them over and over...

DO NOT listen to anything KipKay has to say about Lasers..
He even puts his own child in Harms Way in one of his Videos...
He doesn't seem to have a clue as to Laser safety or Functionality...

Like Rob Said.... All you need to do is a little research and reading
on the Forum... Read the Tutorials... Stickies and FAQs..
Then you will acquire the knowledge to build yoursef a BadA$$
Laser of your own... or even get one from a Member...

wait so what is so bad about kipkay? will this laser build cause possible damage to my eyes or what?

As I stated above...
he has a reputation of shody/questionable/unsafe building techniques...
Then when your build doesn't work you can buy the "Correct" parts
from him at an exagerated price...
Did you never notice he give no exact part numbers or schematics of
the electrical hookup.. And where is the LD driver to protect the Laser
Diode... :undecided:

Not once does he state anything about the need to use appropriate
Laser Safety Googles... If the Laser could pop a balloon what do you
think it could do to your retina...:whistle:

But Hey.... don't listen to us... we're just noobs...
We don't know anything about Lasers....

Good luck with your KipKay build...

Well said, pretty much summed up everything I was going to rant about Kipkay.

Reckon we'll get another little chime from Kip telling us to stop adding to his bad rep?

lol well i wasn't supporting kipkay.. i just didn't know.. but thanks for all the help and i will soon be prepared to attempt a safe laser haha
