I have a bluray sony ps3 diode coming in the mail. I know they are 20mw MAX. I plan on building Daedal's driver to power it. Upon successful build, I will order a 6x BluRay burner and extract the diode from that, hoping for around 100mw or more. This drive on ebay goes for about $400. I am wondering if there is any modification needed to Daedal's driver to get it to work? Also will that be capable of lighting matches, popping balloons, etc.?

I am very anxious to do a similar build for a blu-ray burner! I haven't succeeded yet, but I'm pretty sure it will light matches. Here is a link to a 50 ohm, 11 turn pot from Digikey:

Gazoo had suggested a 50 ohm pot, so I went searching Digikey. This 5mm size pot, alongside the LM317, (instead of any other resistor) should be a perfect adjustable driver for such a project...

Wow, 400 dollors, just remember i would not try to push that, you wouldnt want to break 400 dollors. Just have the pot at the max resistance and turn it up till it starts lasing then i would turn it alitle more and stop so you dont break it.

Remember when your done take some pics ;D, I think it would be the first blu-ray burner ever built here :)

How would you know the limits of the Blu-ray burner unless you actually get it to die? Once it lases I'm sure you can push it higher than that. Just like the red GB diodes. If we all stuck with lase+10, then we'd all be running reds at like ~30ma and not 250ma. ;) I guess it's just a very dangerous path to follow with the BR burners at this time. It's just gonna take some rich mofo out there to sacrifice a bunch of diodes to find their limits.

I don't know if I did something wrong. I built this circuit almost exactly, no 100ohm pot so I used resistors in series. I used a 9v battery instead of 2 3v and I used a bluray diode instead of a 650nm red. I tried the resistor at 200ohm with a red laser first, it was bright on the wall. Then I wired the bluray diode and it was very faint and unfocused in the axiz housing, i turned the focusing each way as much as I could with little effect, by this time the diode became so hot the hot glue melted holding it on? I was confused so I thought to try it at 100ohm and then 50ohm with the red laser first then the bluray with the same results, bluray looks no brighter with more milliamps. I then tried kipkay's circuirt (9v and 150ohm resistor) since I didn't think it was going to work i didn't build it in the first place but I figured what the hell now. I tried it and same result, it is dim and unfocused, it also becomes very hot. Any input?

Sounds like you have a$30 blue LED now :'(. Next time stick with DDL circuit with a 33 ohm resistor if you want it to work and last a while.

I tried DDL first Maybe I should take the laser to 50ohms maybe 100 is too much. I only tried Kipkay's as a last resort since many people had good reviews when searched on google. If I had a problem it was with DDL's circuit unless something must be different for bluray. I will take pics later hopefully but I fear the same you do, luckily they are only $50 on ebay.

I'm not sure exactly as I can't see your circuit, but more resistance would give you less current. For example a DDL circuit with a 100 ohm resistor would probably not let a blu-ray even lase at all. Probably wouldn't lase until ~50 or so. a 33 ohm should give it about 38 mA, where it wil lase nicely and have a decent life. BTW, you can get them on PSXboy.com for $30, or $27 for 5 or more...
