Re: Blu-Ray Writer Harvest - Some Testing

Well, here we go again! I just got the new drive. I got this one for less. $220. I think I'll just let it sit a day or two, instead of getting all anxious like before. I already have the host and driver ready for it. That's a 50 ohm, 12 turn pot. Really nice for adjusting the current: (another great suggestion from Gazoo)
blu-ray driver.jpg

I'm going to put it in an MXDL host just like my PS3 blu-ray host, using 3 X AAA size 3.6 volt 10440 batteries:

Man, the last time, I was testing it...and turning it up...testing...turning it up. (nerve racking for me)  I think this time I'm going to set it at 75mA's and that's it. Slap it in there just like an easy red build.
Jay

P.S. Hey Gazoo, did you get a chance to check out that diode? To see if you can tell if the die is indeed isolated from the case?

Holy crap, another one???   Damn, your wife better not find out about this.
Oh, and I hope this LD lives a long and happy life. ;D

Lol! That's pretty funny man...Actually, since I just sold my bike, I can get away with it. But your right, ('I just sold my bike')... that's my line in case she does find out! Lol...

Re: Blu-Ray Writer Harvest - 3rd Times a Charm -I

Jay,
I took readings between each of the wires and the case and got nothing. Then I took a reading between the two wires and there is 675 kohm's resistance measured in both directions. The diode test function didn't show anything at all....not surprising.

This doesn't mean the die is completely isolated from ground. There is no light emitting from the diode, which means the internal connection between ground and the die may have been blown apart...lol.

The best advice I can give you is to try to find the data sheet for the new diode you are extracting. Unfortunately there are no markings on the diode you sent me to indicate what it is. Sorry, but that is the best I can do at this point.

Thanks Gazoo, I'll have to connect it up, and then test the resistance between the diode case and each lead before I allow the heatsink to contact my MXDL host. (I guess)

Lol...Well, actually, I am waiting for my ESD wrist strap. I have never used one before. I figure I should go ahead and use one for this 3rd attempt!
Talk about 'making us wait', what about Hemlock Mike and drlave?! I've been on the edge of my seat waiting to see some results from their 6 X writer harvest!

Oh man. You should have told me you needed a wrist strap. I throw those things away by the boatload. I build servers, and every server, motherboard, hard drive, etc come with those....

Well, it was cheap enough. Thanks for the offer though! I've never used one. So, I guess you just connect it to the back of your computer or something that is grounded huh?

Yep. As long as the computer is plugged into a 3 prong plug, it shoudl be grounded. You can use anything metal that is 3 prong connected. You can also use a COLD water pipe (hot water may end at hot water heater and not be grounded). The center screw holding your wall plates on is also grounded as long as the paint isn't blocking it.

BEST case is to attach the ground strap to your Anti-static work mat, and ground the work mat. the mats can be pricey, unless you get one of the cheap ones that looks like mylar bubble wrap. I think i paid $5 for mine. Worst thing is to work on a carpeted bench. And avoid anything magnetized as well, such as magnetic screwdrivers.

Hmmm...Well, I don't have a mat, but I guess a grounded wrist strap is better than nothing. Thanks for that advice...

Re: Blu-Ray Writer Harvest - 3rd Times a Charm -I

ill take an extra wrist strap, been needing one of those

in 10 years jay, people will laugh at you for paying 200 dollars for a 2x bluray...

lol, its interesting how some people are like: "Back in the day, I paid $400 for a 5mW red"...

Hope you don't screw this third one up, I can imagine your wife's look when: "Honey, what happened to the bike???"

keep us posted, Ive never seen a blu-ray, let alone a bluray burner!!!

good luck,

amk

You mean like in 2 years! I'm sure there's got to be somebody out there that has already successfully done this. There's no way that I am the first. Somebody that knows what they are doing...like drlava, or Hemlock Mike. Who I know are in the process as we type. They are harvesting 4/6 X blu-ray writers. As for the bike, I can waste a lot of these blu-ray diodes. I got 20k CASH for it. Plus, we just got our taxes done and we're getting back over 6k. So, bring on the blu-rays! I was very nervous on the first two. I'm not that nervous this time. When your nervous, that's when you screw up...

lol one DOES have a sense of power when wielding 20k cash at once.... I cant begin to dream of that much money in cash in one place....

I hope he didn't pay you in singles,

All $100 dollar bills. But that's still a lot of dead presidents to count! It's all going toward bills. All except some that has to go towards lasers and stuff! Lol...

Re: Blu-Ray Writer Harvest - 3rd Times a Charm -I

Ok I couldn't wait for the ESD wrist strap. I need some advice! I have it connected and running at 75mA. I do not have the heatsink connected to the MXDL body yet. The diode is connected like my last one that I killed. Here is a picture of the one I killed to show how it is connected:
BWU diode.jpg

I turned it on, and tested for voltage from each pin to the heatsink (diode case). I got no reading from the negative lead, but I got 2.84 volts from the positive lead to the diode case.
Question:
Does this mean that I can go ahead and connect the heatsink/diode case to the body of the MXDL? Which would be the same as touching the negative lead to the diode case. My thinking says it is ok to do so. But I have killed two of these already. Please give advice after taking a close look at the picture...
Thanks,
Jay

Re: Blu-Ray Writer Harvest - 3rd Times a Charm -I

Hi

Never messed with a blu, but the pic seems to indicate both leads with a wire attached are not the ground. maybe I cant see the photo well or I dont know how the blu pin config works, but those pins seem to be insulated from the case.
