jayrob, was the LD heatsinked in the burner? if so, was its cladding electrically connected to ground?
I never had the heatsink connected to the host. I had it loose, so that I could adjust the pot on my driver. Now that we know that the die is isolated from the diode case, the questions becomes, what if pins 2 and 3 were connected together? Which would effectively be the case, once the heatsink is completely assembled into the MXDL...unless I isolate the heatsink from the body of the MXDL...

i think the negative (-) input of the regulator must be connected through the body as it is, but keep away the *die isolated case from the body casing or cut the pin connected to isolated case at all.... im just wondering this must be the safe way.... what do you think guys?

Just to simplify the question here... Pin 1 is the positive. So, can pins 2 & 3, be soldered together to each other, and then be connected to the negative side of the battery? Because, this is what would effectively be happening once the heatsink is connected to the MXDL...

Hello Jay,
I understand the question, but I do not understand why you would need to hook pins 2 and 3 together. Since the diode case is isolated from the die, it would not make any difference. BlueFusion gave you the correct answer..

Gazoo, of course I realize that you wouldn't need to solder the pins together...I was just trying to clarify my question. I guess I missed Blue's answer... Keep in mind how I must feel after the two blunders. (yeah, I know it's my fault) I had no spec sheet to tell me what I really needed to know. The # 3 pin was short because I cut it before I knew that the configuration was different. (kicking myself in total frustration) So, it probably got damaged during soldering, because I had to get the iron so close to the case in order to get the lead to solder to the short pin.

I still want to do this! Lol... So, I am asking these kind of questions because I am very 'gun shy', because of the cost... So, it sounds like you are in agreement with Blue? It doesn't matter that the diode case is touching the negative side of the battery as well as pin number 3?

Edit: Ok...I got it. I had answered phenol's post, before I read all of the other conversation that had been talked about. So, I understand now. phenol, thanks for helping me to understand this...

P.S. I just sold my bike, and I'm picking up the cash tomorrow. 20 LARGE! Hmmm...sounds like another blu-ray burner is in the near future...Lol!

The third time better be a charm..lol.

About the case being isolated from the die...do we know for a fact it is? Even though I will be looking at your diode we might not be able to tell since it is completely dead. If it suffered from COD there would still be a path for electrons to flow. It will be easy for you to check when you get your new diode. Just check to make sure there is no voltage on the case of the diode by measuring the voltage between positive and the diode's case, and negative and the diode's case.......of course with power applied to the diode.

I would wait on implementing another LD until you are absolutely certain of the pinout. There are many styles. *Here is a sample from a Sanyo page (IIRC). *Thare may or may not be a monitoring diode (photo-diode). *

Gazoo, this test sounds easy enough. So, if I get zero voltage to the case from positive, as well as negative, then this would mean that the die is isolated, and I can connect the heatsink to the MXDL in the normal way. Correct?

Good point there Paul! I don't know if we can find a datasheet for the diode in that drive, but if the test that Gazoo mentioned gives me zero voltage to the case from both negative, and positive, what do you think? Also, as I'm not too keen on reading those diagrams, which one of the drawings is comparable to the red diodes that we are used to? Like the Sony/Senkat, or the open cans? And, does one of the drawings show an isolated die style? It doesn't seem to...

All three of you guys have good points for me here...I really appreciate your help with this. Thank you...

The GB diodes would have been an M or P type but with no PD. I have been looking for a pinout for the BR LD but haven't been successful so far. It may come down to testing. SAM's laser FAQ has a methodology for testing, however, I have to confirm if it will work the same for BR LDs.

Hey Gazoo, you should have received your new heatsink by now, along with the blu-ray writer diode. I was wondering if you have had a chance to take a look at the diode yet?
