Default Bio-Scanner Mk.1

Thought I'd share my latest expereiment with you. This was built as a laser effect light for my "tunes room". I call it my bio-scanner, because it reminds me of the lifeform scanners in sci-fi movies. When it's running in a dark smoke filled room you get the unnerving feeling that it's searching for you. I've used offcuts and recycled bits where ever possible so a pretty cheap build.

Laser is a LCC 660nm from the GGW 6x BR sled, running at 320mA. Powered by a simple custom made LM317 circuit.

Single mirror spirograph produces the light tunnel effect which then reflects off a computer controlled mirror - dual micro-servos, USB controlled by a Pololu Maestro 6 servo micro-controller.

Power for the whole setup is via a computer PSU at this stage - handy regulated power supply.

Programming is simple with the free package Polulo gives you with the micro-controller - Maestro Control Centre.

The finished unit in operation!

noone commenting on my bio-scanner? Is it that shit?

Is it because it doesn't burn holes in stuff? Or just because it's ugly?

I must admit, when I clicked on the title I expected the effect like in the beginning of "Aliens",
when they find frozen Lt. Ripley.

While the setup is pretty impressive, with the mirror controlled by an arduino,
in the end it seems to just point randomly here or there.

So I believe with your setup and a littlel programming you could create much more interesting and impressive movements.

Thanks guys! Now I'm inspired to add more functionality to it, and hopefully another colour. The point of this is the shoe-string budget. If I spend $$$ on bits it's an automatic fail in my book.

Well lasersbee, you are detecting a sarcastic undertone where there is none.
I said I find his setup pretty impressive, all I am constructively criticizing
is the apparently random movement.

I know that feeding random numbers into an algorithm is a fun and easy way to get
some effects in half a dozen lines of code, but if you actually spend a little time on your code, one can
get so much more out of that setup....

There is a lot of sleeping potential in this one....

... is all I'm sayin.

Sorry if that wasn't clear from the beginning.

Imagine what he might do with some real funding...might put some people to shame.

Thanks for clearing that up.... I must have read
something into that.... that wasn't there...

I agree... for someone that may have superior Programming...
Electronics and Assembly skills much more could be done...

I've seen a lot of projects that could be elaborated on...
but that is only if the builder has not reached his knowledge
base abilities.

As a first LPF posted project I find this is a great start....
I'm sure his next project will be even more elaborate...
and I like the way it is set up on a lab stand... very original..
