Hold everything...

desolder and remove the star that the LED is attached to.  it is a CREE LED and better than the run of the mill ones - don't destroy it.  The star itself should NOT be epoxied onto the circuit board so you don't need to remove the LED from the star.

You may need to pry under the star however since that may be epoxied to the aluminum disc under it.
Also, try to unscrew the aluminum disc the star is sitting on by desoldering the wire and using a pair of snap ring pliers (http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=92374) to unscrew it.

For example - http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.3393 - remove this whole piece.  You should see any circuit (if it is a "regulated" light) then.

http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.3257 - this is what the "blow up" of the parts looks like and should give you a clue about how to get in.

you can get a cheap star, or even use a washer, if you need to. http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.4512

Yikes... ok, I don't know if I did actually say to remove the LED from the Star, but that is an excellent point and great links to give a great idea.

Thank you for clarifying that Steve :). Sorry about any confusion :-[;

Yeah, I wouldn't take the led of the star thing.
The pcb that the diode is mounted on has that white thermal epoxy on it, attached to the aluminum.
i will try and pry it out.
I just don't want to break it.

I got a pic of the Circuit board of this light!!
Did what everyone said and maaged to get it out.
Had to pry it out from the bottom though, since whe i took the led off, there was pure aluminum, no hole to the cb.
Good heatsinking!

well... the circuit looks VERY promising actually... But I can't say or comment honestly in hopes of not making any retarded assumptions. The best thing to do is to power it up and hook it up to a load and then test the output over a variety of inputs. This requires having the PCB in hand. I just ordered another flashlight and should be getting it soon. If all else fails, I'll just order that one and try it out.

Thanx;

And now I'm working on one too! Just have to wait for the asix module and go buy me a River Rock. ((Heard there isn't much modding needed for the driver))

I'm working on building my DVD burner and was wondering if the standard "Dorcy Metal Gear" would work fine? I don't mind the size, would actually help in the creation of something to heatsink it with. I wasn't able to find the Mini Dorcy or River Rock at either Target or WalMart but the regular Dorcy was on sale at walmart for $7! So I got one hoping for the best. Please help me out!

I too am going to follow the "Kenom Mini-Dorcy" tutorial for my SenKat group-buy diode. I picked up the Mini-Dorcy for $19 at Target today on my lunch break. I believe there was one or two more, if any of you are in the Milwaukee metro area. It was the Target just south of the Miller Park Stadium.

If anyone's desperate for a mini-Dorcy, I could pick up the remaining two and I can ship within the U.S. for cost. Just PM me and PP me the money.

I was picking up shotshells at Wally-World on Friday to go Trap shooting, and I noticed that the Dorcy Metal Gear was on clearance for $7 there as well. They had probably 15-20 of them in stock still. I was tempted to buy a few but held off. I decided to stick with the mini-Dorcy just to keep everything as identical to Kenom's tutorial as possible. But I think the Metal Gear would make a good host. It was a pretty popular host for LED mods on CPF, so it's probably pretty easy access like the rest of the Dorcy's.

Yeah I'm tempted to pick up a few. For the time being I threw the batteries in and this thing is BRIGHT! I've never really had too good of a flashlight before besides a few maglights and this thing is amazing. I like how it has a larder size too, some good weight, seems to be build amazingly well. And since it uses 3xAAA's I'm sure that will help out the life of it.
