Default Archane's setup/diode project

Ok so instead of posting randomly around I figured I would put all my testing and equipment in one spot now.

so I pulled my diode fomr an Emprez 16x dvd burner, the diord is not round(problem one)
I have pictures of that and my solution
I went and got all the needed components(not al used at once)
1x LM317t (also the NTE956 is the same thing different manufacturer)
5x 4.7 ohm resistor
5x 10ohm resistor
4x silicon diodes
2x 1KV 2200pf Cap
2x CR123 batteries + charger
breadboard(lost my last one)
other crap you'll see later =)

ok first we have pix of the diode I pulled out

now for my test setup(thank you again DDL for the help)
Voltage test

amp test

Current test environment
2x silicon diodes
1x LM317T
3x 4.7 ohm resistor
1KV 2200pf Cap

As you can see i'm getting 2.8v at 200ma I can take out one diode to raise the volage and ma if needed
I will prolly keep it like this as those seem to be reasonble safe number for most diodes that are 16x

i'm still working on the housing for the diode I have to dremel out part of the aixiz housing to fit it

i'll post more as I get to testing
feel free to give me ideas and comments

I recall only one other member on this forum running across that type of diode. The only comment I have is removing one of the diodes may raise the current too much for the diode so be careful with that. The silicon diodes have about a .7 of a volt drop.

BTW, I like your battery holder.. 8-)

Removing one diode put my voltage at 3.17 and my amps at about 290ma(which of course can be fixed by removing one of the 3 resistors

the battery holder, yeah I couldn't find anything commercial so I hit up home depo for 2x 1/2 threaded couplings and 2x threaded caps, then I got creative with some glue and a dremel.

dremel the caps to put the wire through, tap the wire in place and and wind it in a coil shape.

and poof one cr123 battery holder that fits the batteries perfectly, just a heads up you may have to dreemel out some of the inside of the tube in order to allow the battery to fix better I had to remove like 4 threads in the middle of each side and the batteries slide through just fine now.

The batt. holder looks like two 1/2 PVC thr. couplers w/thr. plugs on each end.

I have a LD that looks like that. I pulled it out of an old CD burner.
I was wondering if it was usable because of its shape, Know I know.

yeah I used the small round cutter tool on my dremel to make the whole for the diode on the aixiz module bigger to house it. This needed to be done because the focal length was closer than the lens could get to the diode even if I push it all the way in so I needed to find a way to get the 2 of them closer together.

I don't have a pic because it came out blurry as hell each time I tried and I had to glue the diode in place (which I did 2 nights ago so I can play with it tonight)

I ordered a peltier from ebay http://cgi.ebay.com/Melcor-CP-0-8-31...QQcmdZViewItem

My plan is to build a circuit that can handle powering both, running off 2 maybe 3 CR123 batteries. I'd like to keep it at 2 batteries since they are rechargable I don't care much for how long they last.

Once I get the pelt i'll start some testing. If anyone has any pointers that would be great.

A thermal-sensing circuit

Use a comparator to check for the 'GO' condition. Use a thermistor as a voltage divider with another resistor, and on the pin use a pot. This, when fed into a MOSFET turns on the supply for the circuit of your choice to power up the TEC

I have ordered most of the parts i'm jsut waiting for them to arrive, once they do i'll do more research on what it's going to take to power the unit and keep it cool.

Thanks for the head start on the parts i'll need DDL

Ok so I got my Pelt on friday and played with it all weekend. Damn I wish I knew about these sooner.

So right now made a second circuit(for the time being) consisting of a 22pf cap, 4.7ohm resistor and an led to verify it's on powered by 2 AA's

Right now with that setup it cools down to 55 degrees from an ambient temp of 74 in about 30sec. My next goal is to get transformer of some kind and see if I can't stpe up the current since these things seem to suck alot of juice.

That leads to my question, 2 new AA batteries were drained by this thing in what I think was maybe 20min of use, is that normal?

Running peltiers off batteries isnt a good idea, those things burn tons of power unless you have the cold side very well isolated.

It depends on the size of the peltier too. When I started testing mine it was only drawing 180ma's with a single AA nimh. I think I am only running it at about a volt which keeps my open can diode nice and cool at just below room temp, so that would mean much less current. But my peltier is rated at only 4 watts.
