hey everyone.  i have this Nebo flashlight:
http://www.neboflashlight.com/custom.em?pid=651633

and i thought it would be great to replace the red Diode in it with my DX 50mW green Diode.

i have 3 questions about this.

1: will it even work
2: are the DX Diodes small enough to fit in there. do they look like this?: http://www.sp3plus.co.uk/green-diode-lasers.php
3: if not then where can i buy diodes that will? preferable 50mW or greater.

i think this would be really cool to actually get DX laser inside my Nebo flashlight!

btw these nebo flashlights are actually quite cheap in price that if this modification is sucessful then it would probably be worth buying one.

Well, it advertises as an IR laser ??? I assume they mean red ??

I would have to see this apart to really be able to tell if it would work or not....

green laser modules don't look like that, they are much longer, and much heavier. those diodes are really new, and would cost ALOT!!

well my DX 20's module was about 4cm long, so a 50mw will be about the same. i have no idea where to get those, although it would be interesting to know ;)

Well they do say "Low Cost" on the website. Of course what they mean by low cost could be another matter..lol. But I would think the price range would have to be somewhat competitive with a regular green laser, or they would not be able to sell that many. So the cost may not be as much as one would first think?

You would need to contact the company directly, however I already have and will post back here if/when they reply :)

you have? thanks. are you also interested in trying this modification?

also, here are some comparison pictures to see how big the flashlight part really is:
you can see i still have the laser burn marks on my camera lol

I did contact the company and asked them how much each of them would be. But don't get your hopes up. They usually only sell in very large quantities. Maybe they can let me know who distributes them. I will try to get access to them.

As far as the Nebo, we know that diode is 5mw or less. We don't know if it is being driven by a driver, or if it is just a resistor or something. Also it is possible the switch might not be able to handle a 50mw diode. It would make for a neat host but like SenKat said, we would really need to see what it looks like taken apart, and I don't know how easy it would be.

ah yes much less than 5mw. this laser isnt bright at all. atleast once youve seen a green laser. my guess is i will need to do some de-soldering and maybe even end up just puting everything that was on the DX board onto the mebo board.

so its just your guess that they only sell in large quantities? they havnt told you that though?

They haven't replied yet to my e-mail. Some companies do offer samples for sale, even free. All we can do is wait to see if they reply. I hope they do. I am interested in the diodes.

If worse comes to worse one could always try to put a high powered red diode into it. I saw a few lights like the Nebo on e-bay I was thinking of trying. BTW, how do you switch between the diode and the LED's, is it a dual action switch. I assume it is the circuitry controlling the switching.

as powerful as those diodes are i wouldnt think they would get em out for free lol.
yep click once and the LED's turn on, click again and the laser turns on (and LEDs turn off). click again and everything turns off.

The link for those green diodes was posted earlier by Timelord or someone. They are not direct-injected green diodes, just green DPSS in a small package, and as you say, price is probably alarmingly high

(the reason a DX or other module may be longer is because they have a diverging and collimating lens - and for those to be effective, a bit of space in between. Those diodes don't have all that, hence the 10mRad spec)
