6x Dorcy Jr.?

Hi all, i am thinking of buying a 6x Blu-Ray burner, tearing it apart to get the diode, and mounting it in a Dorcy Jr.

The 6x Diode needs about 100mA to lase properly, and the Dorcy outputs about 300-350mA. I am thinking of using a 10-15 ohm resistor. Voltage is not a problem since the Dorcy Circuit is a boost circuit (3v to 5v), and the diode needs about 5v, so i could use rechargeable CR123As. Who thinks this will work?

Edit: I will also put a capacitor in there for good measure!

I think you will have much better luck using an MXDL instead with a good heatsink.

Those are to bulky and hard to work with, they are jayrob's specialty though. But do you think it might work? Because according to my calculations, it should work %100.

ya know I'd have to agree with ol' spiderboy there. The Mxdl be it a good host or not in my opinion is just big and bulky. I much prefer the size of the dorcy for a small handheld laser. However I realize that most folks just don't like small and want to feel "the beast" in thier hands. So big it is. it's the reason my barrels are one 1 battery size but instead 2. I will at some point and time be offering up the 1 battery barrel. anyway. Just my opinion.

I do not think that the bluray burner will work in this host as basic electronics dictates. If you increase voltage, something has to give. in this case it's current. reduce the voltage and you gain that current back. I do NOT think that you would be able to get both 100ma and 5-6v for a bluray burner from one cr123 and a boost circuit but I could be wrong. Try it and prove me wrong.

I think the Dorcy will produce over 100mA @ 4.5-5v, I seen measruements over this while I was testing for my first Dorcy Jr BR, using a BR dummy-load, (the 4-green LED type). Normally, you can use a 100ohm resistor for a "dummy-load' too, would this be the same for a 6x BR?, about the same voltage, right?
I also agree about the size, I like them small, especially when the BR generate so little heat, and draws so little mA, there is no advantage to using a larger host, in fact I am currently working on a "BR 1xAA Cree-C2", so far the stock driver is not as stable as the Dorcy JR.

Interesting... I will raise some funds and probably buy a 6x burner and see if it will work. Because if it works, that would be very amazing! It's time to start mowing lawns ;D

IMHO (and I'll bet everybody else's too), the best DIY build for a 6 X is this:

Hands down! Kenom's barrel with Lava's driver!

I mean, my build is pretty cool with the Meredith glass lens, but that barrel of Kenom's is so schweet!
