Hi to the forums I have a question upon my 5mw true green laser from DX I have followed some of the instructions here and made some holes and try to rotate the screws inside the laser but it doesn't look like it has made any difference so i was thinking is it because there is a resistor to cause this or is this thing don't work at all? cause i've been doing research and i see people turning there 5mw to like 20mw ;D

To make it simple if you want a 20mw green laser, buy a 20mw green laser.
adjusting the pot isn't a good idea if you don't want to risk breaking your laser.

Those pot mods really only work good on the first greenies sold, the ones sold these days usually have saturated crystals, so upping the current with the pot just makes battery life worse, it won't make green output much different. Like pwnstar said, if you want a 20mW, you just have to buy a 20mW laser.

So does that mean this one cannot be modded no more? also this 5mw the screw is on top next to the buttons unlike the other one i saw from the forums and for the 30 mw can you see the green beam in daylights? and can you mod the thing?

How about modding the output of a DX True 5mW DOWN? A friend bought a one from DX and wants o use it for presentations and such indoors, and it's really too bright to do that. In a dark room, it makes people squint and such. Can you turn the pot up and decrease the power any, or is the pot typically installed already turned down?

I think it doesn't look like its changing when i turn the screws inside the laser the screws were located right next to the button on the top and i am wondering if i can modify the output of the thing itself but i don't know how to do that so if anyone can help me by pointing out which lil tiny chip on the circuit board to destroy i would love to know lol cause right now i can still see the lil laser beam but not in my room with the daylight outside

eh, Usually I don't complain about this, but please use punctuation. It will help us greatly in trying to read your post.

You can never modify a 5mw laser into a laser powerful enough to see the beam in a room during the day (unless by modify, you mean replace the whole laser module with another). On my 30mw green I can hardly see the beam during the day. If you want to see a trick, use sum smoke or fog in your room to let the beam stand out more.

I'm also not sure by what you mean what chip to destroy...
?? If you destroy sumthing on the board I guarantee your laser wont work. plz put more thought into your posts.

I think he is talking about that "mod" video, where someone "destroys" a resistor on the PCB with a soldering iron (while holding the soldering iron at the barrel :)).

If turning the potentiometer (pot not screw) doesn't help, there is nothing you can do. Every so often someone starts a thread asking how to turn a 5mW laser into a burner, but it can't be done.

There used to be some green lasers, that were made with components which were not used at their maximum ratings. There, "modding" it actually could increase the output. After the manufacturer built the lasers, they reduced the output to the power which they sold it as. This meant you could get some increase by turning the pot.

Now most green lasers are built, adjusted till they reach maximum output (depending on the crystal quality), and then sorted depending on their power. The manufacturer doesn't know what will come out before it's done. After measuring it, they just sort them according to the measurement. Sometimes they don't even sort them good, so you can sometimes get 30mW when you buy a 5mW or you can get 15mW when you buy what was supposed to be a 50mW.

But unless the manufacturer actually turned the pot down, for the laser to match what it is sold as, you can not "pot mod" it. And destroying a component on the board will most likely destroy your laser, because you will be left without a driver.

If you want a more powerfull laser, buy a more powerfull laser. During the day, the beam can faintly be seen indoors with my cheap 50mW (at 70), but when sun is shining through a window, not even my expensive 150mW (at 170) can create a solid beam without some smoke or fog. And i'm talking about verified power in both cases (while DX lasers vary for the above mentioned reasons). During the night oustide, they both produce magnificent beams tho.

thank you for the explanation above cause I looked into those ebay music laser lights for the disco and such it says only 30mw and they can shoot out like massive crazy beam. And for your 150mw does that thing burns stuff up? with this 5mw of mine at night time if i give my battery a full charge i can see the beam in the dark without doing smoke trick or water spray trick but the beam ain't very bright like the one i see in youtube...And damn i always thought people could modded to make it more powerful lol...I shouldn't have drilled 3 holes in my laser...O well..lol I guess i am gonna try to order another one with higher MW
