I just bought on ebay
Item number: 320215032455

Here's his video

(it won't let me post links)

It says 350mw for only $60 with a driver board. He claims up to 600mw with proper cooling. Anyone try this or any thoughts?

Fixed it for ya ;D You need to have ten or twenty posts (I really don't remember) in order to post links. ;)

I would bet my bottom dollar it is no different than the open can diodes we are harvesting from 18X or 20X DVD burners. Running it 600ma's with a TEC might give you a total of an hour use if you are lucky. I would not run it much over 400ma's

The driver he is including is the same one I reviewed in the following thread. All he has done to it is add wires and a capacitor.

Anyone can do this for half the price he is selling it for as long as you are careful harvesting the diode. The total cost he charged including shipping is $74.00...ouch.

Not 600mw! 600ma as an experimenters kit, view the post pic below  The ad for the open can on its own reads:

This open can unit is produced in mass exclusively for Pioneer 22x optical drives and boasts a whopping 350mw of continuous raw power. Unlike it's 16x and 18x predecessors, it is able to take your DIY projects to the next level. Able to run safely on 360ma's of continuous draw with adequate heat sinking.  Because of it's open can design, cooling efficiency is much greater than a comparable closed can design. This diode can be pushed into the area of 600ma's, but is not recommended without a TEC or liquid cooling unit attached. This diode has an active photosensor output pin. If your looking for  power, and good quality beam specs, this is the ideal way to go when building a red DIY.

I looked at it again and I feel really dumb again, thanks guys.

Don't feel dumb. THere are a lot of people out there who twist words around and skew numbers/statistics in their favor to make a quick buck. Good thing about this forum is there are a lot of very intelligent people who can help you. Maybe this will make you feel better, you could have paid a few hundred dollars to buy a high power burning laser online ;) that was under spec, and not even as powerful as the one you will make for $60....

I will guarantee you most of us felt dumb at one time or another while getting to know this hobby...it's ok ;D But I look at all of it as being learning experiences and some of mine have been costly too. And besides, desslok is right. I believe you paid $75.00 including the shipping. So once you add the cost of the module, you will have a high powered red laser that will put out in excess of 200mw's.

I do suggest you get some goggles and recommend these:

yea I contacted the guy a while back, he said he had hit problems at work, and was overpricing DX items (like AMC 7135's for 17.99 (single)) to try and make a bit of cash.... lol, he confirmed, the diodes are the open cans were using

You contacted me 2 days ago and I confirmed no such thing, I get my diodes through my brother who runs a Pioneer authorized business. Yes in one sense they are the same minus the shock, dust exposure and risky business of harvesting, that some newcomers do not wish to attempt. When I ship these at the listed price they come in a 4mm thick acrylic case with the board wired and tested, ready to go. If you buy a dvd burner as a noob, and damage the diode, it will cost you the same to take the risk a second time. Every person who has bought from me have been very happy with their item. The shipping is well accepted by the purchaser when they see the 15 dollars worth of protection that their new toy was shipped in. Take a gander at my feedback, it speaks for its self.

Yes I am excited and still waiting for the product (diode as well as the other things I discussed and purchased from you...TEC housing and peltier cooling)

On its way, my friend, there was a last minute upgrade so I had to make it custom. But your getting a nicer housing than the usual ones I sell. You will be happy with the output on that, the better optics are in that unit which dont absorb as much light as the typical lenses I sell in the cheaper units. It looks the same as the housing you saw but I added 2mm dia. to the area which conducts the heat from the diode and extra conductive paste as well. You wont find a better deal on ebay, I also garuntee my stuff, and am not in the game to rip people off. I also want to mention the work related trouble which was sarcastically refered to by a previous post was my leg being crushed by a forklift at work and this new business im trying to start is to feed my family, not just to make extra money. I also explained to that person that the prices will be going down but startup costs must be covered first.

Sounds good! If it is quality and everything makes me happy I will be back to buy more. Any 100-200mw green lasers (preferably built already)??
