Would it be possible to take this apart:

http://www.lasershowparts.com/store/index.php?_a=viewProd&productId=29

And use the diode and other parts to make a 300mW 635nm handheld? All you would have to do would be create a new driver board (smaller) specifically designed for batteries and create a new housing with good heat dissapation. Would this be possible? Yes it wuld be pretty expensive but in my opinion worth it. 635 is alot brighter than 650-670.

Also, you could use this for a cheaper one:

http://www.lasershowparts.com/store/index.php?_a=viewProd&productId=27

So would that be a stupid idea? Would it be much cheaper just to get a diode by itself?

Well, if you have the money than go ahead and do it, but it's obvious it would be a lot cheaper to just get a dvd burner from newegg and extract an open can diode. You might even get more than 300mW.

But DVD burner diodes are 650nm-665nm, not 635nm. I think LaserGlow sells a 200mW 635nm handheld for around that price.

I know dvd diodes aren't 635nm, I was referring to the power you could get from an open can at a low cost, not the brightness. ;)

Entity, I have been wondering similar things myself. I have a portable style housing into which I could transplant one of their small metal modules if anyone's interested.

Laserglow sells a portable 635 orion that you might be interested in.

Entity, if you've got your heart set on a 300mW red handheld, Dragonlasers is gearing up to sell a DPSS red @ 150-300mW in the Spartan body. It's 671nm, though, not 635.

Isn't that 635nm multimode at 300mW? Yea sure the dvd opencans are singlemode, but we're overdriving them.

lasever 635nm modules are tec cooled, its a nice idea but i think you would be wasting your money

I guess the TEC would make it difficult to make this into a compact handheld unit. Surely the electronics could be downsized, but that would be about it.

On the other hand, it should be possible to drive the diode with different optics and no TEC (as you would a dvd diode). The problem is that with a stripe multimode diode like that, the beam specs would not be as good as from a dvd diode.

Bad beamspecs arent a problem for creating nice laser shows for an audience, but i think you'll be very dissapointed using it as a pointer.

Well I won't be attempting this. But I think it is possible. WLs Spyders use TECs.

I wouldnt attempt it either really, those units are quite expensive and the chances of a good result limited.

I can get TECs from 10 cm to 1 mm. I'm fairly sure I could find a TEC to fit anything into a portable laser.

And why thankyou toked323, I aim to please, and that's about what I aim for.
You think of something and I can probably make it or get it.

just found this: TE Technology
some pretty darn small tecs there; some round too.
min. order $85 but prices not too bad (TE pricelist)... and quantity discounts are good. Anyone know if these really are good prices? Bluefusion?

I thought it mightbe nice to get say 5-6 of the 4x9x3.25mm (WxHxTh) units, $19.40 each ($15.80 at qty 25), and put them in a cylindrical housing... maybe a good cooler for my 5-diode burner unit?

what I really want is a flexible tec that could just be wrapped around the inside or outside of a housing...
