i suppose you could use it for a red. but you would need to make sure that the input voltage is lower than the voltage accross the LD. so it should work off 2*AA's.
probably a good idea to have a zener diode to protect from too high voltages

the schematic for the first one is in the datasheet

Woop is busy studying at the moment, i think..

The boost driver is not suitable for reds. If the input voltage exceeds the diode voltage, the diode would see the entire battery voltage, and it would be like "direct drive" from the battery. For reds you would need the SEPIC configuration with two inductors, which can both buck and boost and maintains a constant current with an input voltage higher or lower than the diode voltage (similar to FlexDrive).

BTW, i noticed you are using the AixiZ 650nm AR coated glass lens for your Blue Ray.. The wrong coating blocks some light and they are actually worse than non coated acrylics.

So is there a difference between the diodes in PHR-803T sleds and the sled?
i think i read somewhere that they are both blue but use different wavelengths?

Yes, there is a difference, but none of them are blue. Both are near UV - 405nm.

The difference is in the power. The KES-400 for PS3 can barelly do 10mW reliably. Sometimes it just dies for no obvious reason. There were some freaks among them, that did 26mW and i know of at least one, that did 79mW and burnt it's own window! But those were rare, and you never knew what you have unless you risked killing it. I don't like the KES-400 diode.


The PHR-803T for X-BOX HD-DVD drive can easily do 100mW, and can be pushed to almost 200mW, but then usually dies in a week. At just over 100mW they can work for a long time tho, and look amazing. The uncollimated beam can sting skin, and focused it even cuts white paper!


The difference is in power, and the PHR is much more sturdy. If the difference was in the wavelength, we would have one more color available..


Unfortunatelly, we don't.. There are 455nm diodes "available", but they cost $800 each, if you buy 10 samples. ;)
