18650 Cree Host - P4 emitter Hack / Mod

Hey guys! I just bought a Jayrob 18650 kit and I got to say, it is one of the cleanest and well built hosts out there!

The mod I have found with this host is pretty simple yet very practical and aesthetically pleasing! The P4 emitter is situated on the pill of the 18650 host and is soldered in place with two small wires... here is a picture that Jayrob supplies on his thread..

If you unsolder those wires you can take the emitter off you will notice under neath there are two small holes where small flimsy wires protrude from. I decided to modify this a little.

I turned the pill over and unsoldered the PCB board from the pill, like shown in Jayrobs thread...

Once I removed the PCB, I then unsoldered all the components and drilled two small holes with a finger drill and placed my positive wire through and soldered it to the PCB positive contact, then did the same for the negative wire.

I then used a small dremel and drilled out the pill, making sure I left a tiny ledge for the emitter to sit on, all the way around. Lastly I placed the PCB back in and epoxied (only need a tiny bit.... might need to remove it later) the P4 emitter onto the little ledge.

The handy thing is that the back of the emitter has two gaps to bundle your wires through, keeping ever thing neat. It also has a heat sink, built for the LED, that sits on top. To utilize the heat sink, simply buy non-conductive thermal paste / epoxy, and mount your driver on top, that way it will keep the driver a bit cooler, especially if you are running the new 445nm diodes at >500ma.

Here is an image of my flexdrive sitting on top of the inverted P4 emitter... The grey material is the non electrical conductive / thermal conductive material, available as sheets for use on transistors and other electrical components.

There are so many options with this kit now! :crackup:

Personally, I like to drill out the pill and mount the driver inside...

This gives more room inside the head, and I can leave the heatsink a little longer as well...

This option is especially desirable if your planning on using an AixiZ 405 lens for a 445 build. Because the AixiZ 405 lens sticks out the front farther than most lenses.

And if you have room inside the head, then you can slide your module farther into the heatsink if you want to have your lens more 'flush' with the face of the heatsink.

Especially if you want an EzFocus adapter with an AixiZ 405 lens... :)

What's the current going through it? Can you adjust it? I have a 2x 18650 Cree p7 flashlight that draws 2.8A on high mode!:eek:

Mikeeey the P4 emitter nor the standard PCB is drawing any current. The emitter is used a a base to mount the driver on and used as a tiny heat sink. I drilled through the PCB board and soldered the wires directly to the contacts. Then those wires will connect directly to the driver. I also removed all components from the PCB and used a direct connection to driver. The driver has not been set yet but I'm planning on ~750ma.

for this kit, would it be possible to put the driver in the aixiz module, and just solder the leads to the pill?

Yes that's possible, its just easier to mount it like shown in the tutorial above, plus it takes the heat produced by the driver away from the diode.
