Battery:

6S 12 Amp hour Lipo pack! :)

Battery voltage monitor color code:

Bright blue - Full charge
Cyan - Very good
Green - Good
Yellow/Amber - Low warning
Red - Batteries low




Voltage and current readings:

To the emitter - 33.2 Volts / 3 Amps

Battery current draw - 4.07 Amps

This will be about 3 hours run time between charges... :D

Total weight with battery and everything - 7 pounds, 8 ounces. (2 pounds lighter than my 100W HID build)

I already had the balance charger. But if you don't have one that will handle a 6S Lipo pack, then you will need one...

Handle is 3/4" X 3/4" aluminum square - Home Depot

Front stand is 3/4" X 1/8" aluminum flat - Home Depot

It's a fun project, quite a bit of work though. But nice payoff! :cool:

Nice build, as always! :)

Those 100W LEDs are damn bright ... going to need to pick up another of those at some point. Can think of lots of uses for those!

What's the total cost of this build?

Not too bad at all for parts only...

I would say about $40 for the LED, Lens/reflector, both drivers.

Then $25 for the heatsink and fan.

Maybe $20 bucks in the aluminum pieces and small bolts.

I got the wire management clips for about $10 bucks.

18 gauge wire - less than $10 bucks.

Voltage monitor - $30

The big expense is the battery. Pretty much all of my stuff that I like to build is designed around a quality battery which is one of the high cost items.

I got that battery for about $107 shipped. I already had the balance charger for my RC heli's. (you need a good balance charger for a Lipo pack like this)

As you can imagine, the time involved is the biggest cost. (IMO)

It was a very time consuming and tedious build. But that made it all the more rewarding in the end... :)

Cool light - it does sound like a jet is about to depart though... is that the fan running or something else in the video?

It's the phone mic picking up sound really loud...

In the video, you can hear the fan come on, but then there are other background noises.

The fan is actually pretty quite... (IMO)

Good work, now for a 500W :eg:

Yeah I looked at those...

70 Volts, 7 Amps = 490 Watts!

It would be nice to just swap out emitters but I'm sure this CPU heatsink and fan won't handle cooling that kind of heat... :undecided:
 
That would depend a bit on the thermal maximums of the LED as well.

Let's say you could get a heatsink-fan set that is as good as 0.2 K/W. 500 watts of power would drive that 100 celcius above ambient, which is hot but perhaps acceptable to some high power leds for brief periods.

Considering the power consumption it would to run that long anyway (20 minutes perhaps on this battery pack).

There actually are some (huge...) heatsink-fan combinations for cpu's that go down in the 0.1 k/W range, making continous operation of a 500 watt model feasible, though not all that portable ;)
