Dragon lasers are selling 589nm pens (5mw) surprisingly cheaper than CNI. A while back I talked to CNI's sales person Ava, they said a GLP-589 5mw was 350$ plus 80$ shipping (I live in the USA) so that racks up to 430$ shipped. What I am wondering is why DL sell that cheaper than CNI. I would also like to know if DL for 589nm lasers are good as in quality, etc. thanks!

DL sells CNI lasers. The best that we can guess is that DL is clearing out their stock on handhelds and possibly pointers as well.

I have the 50mW spartan from them. It's a nice laser, and this wavelength is hard to find this cheap. As Crazyspaz said, it is a CNI laser, just rebranded.

The biggest issue i have is the very short duty cycle. 589nm just can't be stabilized properly in hosts these small. Even at 5mW, I doubt the aurora pen could be run any longer than the spartan. All this is due to how 589nm is produced.

Is it just me, or does that seem very overpriced for a 5mW? I got my 50mW 589nm with a BE for right around $400 I think.

Honestly, to me it's a choice of power vs portability.

The 5mW Aurora will be much more portable then the Spartan, but obviously has less power. In turn, the Spartan is more powerful(@ 50mW) but it won't be as portable as the Aurora. So it's your choice as to which you find more appealing!

And yes, DL is quality since as crazyspaz mentioned, it's from CNI :)

Duty cycle is the name of the game here. In such a small host it will be possible to kill the pump diode by not observing the duty limit. I'd estimate 30sec maximum of on time before having to allow the entire device (including internals with poor heatsinking) to return to room temperature.

Thanks Alex i'm thinking of buying the 50mw spartan from DL. Also about your group buy (I'm usedwolverine57) I am not going to buy the glp-589.

Simple. because they're buying in bulk, which is cheaper. Though if they sell enough other things at a modest markup, they can afford to take small hits on more expensive stuff.

I'm not trying to derail anyone's hope of a decent last but has the Spartans quality been brought into question? Laser under spec/ poor customer service from DL? I know fluctuation is the nature of these DPSS.
