Hey all, I've just recently become interested in the whole laser scene and want to get my hands on one. I don't know all that much about them, but am greatly interested. I don't want to spend too much, maybe $100, and don't need an extremely powerful one. Maybe 30mW or so. I was looking at the 30mW green laser pointer from Optotronics for $75, seems like a good deal to me and from what I have heard the company seems to be reliable. Any other suggestions from anyone? I checked out DX and their deals seemed to good to be true and gave me the impression of cheap rubbish. I want a good quality one that will last. And what exactly is the capabilities of a laser of that power?

BTW I am new to these boards, and a laser newbie, so help is greatly appreciated if I have set my eyes on the wrong mark. :)

Thank a bunch,

70dd.

A nice 30mW is a good starter unit to get you going in the world of lasers, but I have to warn you, once you get a laser that powerful, you'll want more. And more. And more. It's an unfortunate side effect of this hobby, no matter how much power you get, you'll want more.

You've got your eyes on the right prize, so to speak. As for DX being rubbish, well you're semi-right. They are a big gamble. Some people get powerful, reliable units that never give them any problems, and some people get piles of shit that break before they even receive them.

OK, thanks. Is Optotronics the place to go? It seems to be the best price for that unit that I have seen so far. And as for DX, maybe it is worth it to get a 30mW for a third of the price, but I want reliability, so if it takes like a month to ship from DX thenIi don't want to have to wait again and again if i get a faulty one.

And about the 30mW, what exactly can it do? I'm not expecting it to e able to light a box of matches, but yeah. And would it be worth spending the extra $30 for the 55mW pointer?

Thanks again.

If you want reliability you should go with the optotronics 30mw. Basically they are a Dx true 30 that has actually been tested to make sure it puts out 30mw and doesn't have mode hopping problems. They also have a decent IR filter. Additionally you would get it much faster if you live in the USA.

The DX true 30 lasers are generally a good buy. They usually work fine 90% of the time and the other 10% of the time you get a pos. The downside is that you need to wait a LONG time for the dx lasers.

I live in Australia, but as long as I get what I ordered for I don't mind waiting. But if i go DX then i might end up waiting over a month and go through just as much money getting the same thing i might of gotten straight of from Optotronics.

But if they work 90% of the time then maybe thats the way to go.

Btw if you want to pop balloons you should go for the 55mw pointer. 30mw isn't really good for much other than pointing and looking at the green beam.

May doesn't sound that promising, and Nova is out of stock anyways. Thanks for the thought though. And out of interest, wouldn't it only be 15mW, being an X15?

Okay so now I'm leaning towards the 55mW option. Just like Amnizu said, more power. I'm hesitant to buy from DX because I don't want to risk wasting my money and time. So the $105 from Optotronics is looking like the best bet.

I found another site which is quite cheap, although i don't know about its reliability. Is anything known about them? Maxson Technologies: www[dot]maxsontechonline[dot]com/products2[dot]html
Hmm i couldn't post the link.
