Many of you are aware that DTR has been selling 20mm diode modules:

20mm Copper Modules for 9mm, 5.6mm and 3.8mm Diodes

I'm working on developing some host components to fit the modules and should finish the design soon. In particular, the first parts will be a new bezel and heat sink holder for the S4 host, which can also be used on the C6. The bezel will tighten onto the module and hold it in compression against the pill.

This drawing shows the general layout of the parts:

Stay tuned for updates.

Interesting! That's got some promise. Will be paying attention. Best wishes with your design.

Here's another drawing showing the entire layout:

Working on the individual part drawings and dimensioning now.

Actually, with this design, is it necessary to make the bezel and module holder separate parts or could they be combined into one?

Would be great if the bezel ring was also the focus adapter somehow.

Unfortunately since the bezel or a combined part holds the module in place and prevents it from rotating you will still need a separate focus adapter. But combining the two parts (bezel and module holder) reduces the complexity and cost.

Here are a couple of photos of the first prototype of the DTR 20mm diode module adapter for the C6 and S4 hosts. I decided to combine 2 parts into one, which is simpler and less expensive with the same utility.

I'll show it assembled with the other components as soon as we receive the prototypes. We should have a production quantity available for sale mid to late February.

It would be nice if we could get some cheap focus rings for the lenses available. The kind that come with 12mm modules and the lens holder.

I super appreciate that!
Can you get some 501b heatsinks to go with your hosts? Apparently certain 501b hosts are different than others so it's not really that easy to just order heatsinks for them.

I'm also curious, do you think the price for the extended focusing rings may ever go down? They cost 20 times more than the standard focus ring.

I would have to take measurements and design it, unless someone has one handy and they could send one to me. But yes, I would be interested in selling them. I was planning to integrate a recess for a driver board brass ring in the bottom.

The extended focus rings are made in small quantities while the standard ones are mass produced. But I could run a sale.

Here are some photos of the prototype 20mm diode module adapter assembled with a DTR 20mm diode module and an S4 host.

The inside lip of the adapter makes direct contact with the module and holds it in compression against the driver pill. By using a small amount of thermal grease, effective heat transfer can be established from the module to the adapter and the pill, and through the rest of the host.

Obviously a good number of different diode-driver combinations can be used in this configuration. I leave it to the imagination of the builder to decide what is the best combination of parts for their application. If you have any questions though, please let me know!

We plan on including a small O-ring that can be placed between the end of the module and the lip of the module adapter to compensate for slight tolerances in the length of the module if necessary.

I recommend using an extended focus ring with this setup because the module is recessed slightly inside the module adapter.

Note that this part is intended for use with the 20mm copper module with the built-in driver shelf. Due to differences in length it will not work with the other versions of the module (although Jordan told me that the other versions will be made the same length sometime in the future).

The production units will be black anodized.

Hi Gary,

I'm assembling a grab-pack in case I have to abandon my sailboat out on the ocean and jump in a life raft. Aside from the regular flares etc, I am looking to purchase a laser that I could use to alert nearby vessels. Now I know nothing about lasers except that I think they would make a great tool in case I need to be rescued. What laser would you recommend for this purpose?

I think that even a 5mW green unit would be suitable for that purpose, depending on the distance.
