Screwed over by CNI for $325.00

In 2010, I shipped two lasers back to CNI for repair. They included one 400mW “GLP-980-400mW” infrared laser and one 80mW green 80mW “GLP-532-80mW” green laser. I had paid $185 and $140 each for each laser, respectively, for a total of $325.00.

“Lu Wang” (cniding@126.com) of CNI had provided me with the return shipping instructions: Ship to CNI’s address in China...declared for only $20.00 total...with the RMI number written on the outside of the box.

I packed up the lasers carefully, followed CNI’s instructions, and shipped the package to China via USPS Priority Mail International Parcels (Label/Receipt #LJ53 4862 697U S) on October 12, 2010.

I didn’t hear anything for over a month, so I checked with the USPS and found out that although a small flat rate box shipped via “Priority Mail International Parcels” cannot be tracked all the way to its destination, but they did confirm that the package had arrived in China.

On November 18 I emailed CNI to inquiry about the status of my repair. Lu Wang emailed me back and asked me for a tracking number because they hadn’t received the package yet. I sent them the Label/Receipt # and again they claimed they hadn’t received anything.

Over the course of the next month I exchanged a series of emails with CNI, where I provided all the information I had about the shipment, and they continued to deny they had received anything. The last email I received from them was on December 12, when Lu Wang wrote to me:

“However, we can not check out the shipment with the nubmer you offered, our post office said there is no such label/receipt nubmer of your package.
Can you recheck the nubmer, and see if it is wrong? We will contact our office again to see if we can find it.
Usually it can not be lost, please do not worry.”

I wrote CNI back again, providing the Label/Receipt # again, as well as the receipt from the USPS.

At that point, I stopped hearing from CNI.

To sum up this ordeal:

1. I lost both my lasers, worth $320.00.

2. If I make a claim with the USPS, I can only recover the $20.00 that I insured the lasers for (as per the instructions provided by CNI).

3. I suspect that even if my lasers WERE delivered to CNI, there’s a chance they’re not being honest about receiving it. They have no motivation to tell me, because they know that the USPS cannot confirm whether the package was delivered to their facility. Therefore, they can claim the package was lost and they don’t owe me anything.

I’ve shipped many things to various countries using a variety of methods during the past ten years, and I’ve had nothing get lost. Even if my package was held in customs for a long time (which is probably the next most plausible scenario), it should have either eventually been cleared for shipment to CNI, or returned to me in the United States.

I hate shipping packages to China via the private carriers (DHL, Fedex, or UPS) or the more expensive USPS “Global Express” because the cost can frequently exceed the value of the item. But in this case, shipping to China via Priority Mail International may have given CNI an easy scapegoat.

The fact that CNI stopped communicating with me about this issue is really frustrating. I’m REALLY disappointed with CNI. I feel like they may have really screwed me over.

Seems to be a rather consistent story with chinese companies.

If you ship an item back, it will not "arrive" if you cannot prove that it arrived via tracking.

Sorry to hear about your loss.

This happened to me. If you give them the number on the customs form, the post office can usually dig it up.

I picked up 2 589's here on the forum, both CNI, both not working.. I spoke to a rep there, and the
communication left me uncertain..

One of the lasers was still under warranty, but decided against sending it back
and figured id make a project out of them instead of risking the loss..

Something in the back of my mid told me to avoid it. Shipping with tracking to china
will run you some good $ via fedex. IIRC is was around 150$. The service would have
been fast, but I saw it as risk on top of risk.

I waited a long time because I thought MAYBE, EVENTUALLY...my package would turn up somehow. I'm pretty freakin certain at this point that I'll never see it again.

I wonder why it costs so damn much to ship trackable packages TO China, yet it seems so cheap for trackable packages to be sent FROM China.

Thanks, Chinese companies, for screwing over your U.S. customers....

Next time, I wonder what would happen if I shipped the laser with the correct amount of insurance...$320 rather than $20?

Trevor...the Post Office was able to track it only to the point that it was handed to Chinese customs.

In your case, were they able to give you more information, or confirm delivery?

I myself wonder how they get tracking for less than 5$, and why North American
postal services honor this by updating it? Better service for overseas shippers
and we pay the price with service cuts and inflated prices.. truly sucks.

Im in Canada, and to ship to the USA, with tracking, cost me 20$ minimum for a small package..
I tried Canada post express service to get tracking to the
UK, and once the package left Canada, tracking no longer worked. rip off..

If you send it marked for the full value, they would probably just refuse delivery.
Either it would show back up at your door, or get 'lost' as well..

When I return lasers to CNI, I always try to get CNI to use their choice carrier and pay the shipping (which is FedEx btw) if they would not pay shipping, as when the laser is out of warranty, I pay the ridicules shipping for FedEx, and yes, it is too expensive that way! -GH

Postal Services in other countries are not as reliable as USPS, especially in China. Priority Mail International is OK if it does not matter if the package gets there or not---no tracking being available.

A Priority Mail International Flat Rate envelope or small box can be sent Registered however for an additional $11.75----Registered Mail is 100% trackable as it is signed for each time it passes hands.

Really the best a fastest way is Express Mail International or Global Express Guarenteed to China for $38-$44

Ultimately it is your fault for not sending it by a trackable method, unfortunately. Sending a package without any way to prove delivery means you do not care if it is delivered or not--can afford loss of whatever is in the package.

Sorry to hear you were thinking Priority Mail International without being "Registered" was a secure way to send to China.

Maybe the title should be changed to I Screwed Myself Out of $325.

Maybe an even better title would be "I didn't take every f***ing precaution necessary to protect myself from being cheated of $325 by the corrupt, incompetent, and unscrupulous postal service, government, and various businesses that exist in China."

It's so long ago, I don't remember if I shipped this package or my assistant shipped it. I usually am pretty thorough about these kinds of things and most likely would have opted for some kind of trackable method of shipping; however, if my assistant mailed it she just may have used poor judgement. Anyway...yup, it's my fault. Lesson learned. Won't be making this mistake again.

(Too bad all the cool lasers aren't manufactured in USA. In fact, too bad most of the stuff that Americans like to buy isn't manufactured in USA. But I digress....)

Hi Customer, I have been working in CNI about 6 years, and we never let customers have lost return lasers, we always offer our best service and reply all your emails. Please find the last email you send to me in 2010 about this sitaution, you never said this laser is lost, just let me wait for your answer. Now it is no reason to complain me after two years. I do not want to judge your behavior of giving us wrong understand and bad review on this forum, but I hope you could let me know what you want us to do. Thanks!

Hello Lu,
Thanks for your reply. We have already contacted the USPostal Service several times. They have done everything they possibly can. They said the number on the package cannot be "tracked" like UPS or DSL. They said that sometimes items are held in Customs and then are returned to the USA after several months. At this point, I guess we should just wait to see if the lasers will be returned to Cliff. Next time he will ship via UPS or DSL, even though it is very expensive to do that. Thank you so much for all your help. Please watch for the lasers and contact us if they are sent to you.

Thank you so much,
Andrea C.

Hi Andrea,
We checked our post office and Customs, and they said there is no such tracking number you have offered to us LJ53 4862 697U S. They said it is better to contact your local post office for further information.
Could you do that?
Sorry we can not halp but wait.

Best Regards,
Lu Wang

Label/Receipt #LJ53 4862 697U S

This is by no means a trackable number. I recently found this out when inquiring about a package from the US, once that package leaves the country the Label/Receipt number becomes useless.

Next time you should:
A) Fork out for Insured and Tracked shipping
B) Insure your package for it's actual worth in the event something happens.
