I just got my laser from DX and it's great. A green 30mw pointer

however- i am worried about the IR and found this site; safetyglassesusa

8 bucks for IR glasses? What's the downside here? Anyone bought anything from them before? I saw 400$ for Ir glasses on some other site so this seems weird

They look pretty neat. Got a pretty large range too.

Though yeah, cheap prices don't always mean good bargains I'd go onto google and see if any random websites have reviewed that site.

Look at the compliance. They are not certified to take an exposure to coherent, monochromatic light.

Here is a description of the compliance of those glasses (Z87.1):

"ANSI Z87.1-2003, published in August 2003, establishes performance criteria and testing requirements for devices used to protect the eyes and face from injuries from impact, non-ionizing radiation and chemical exposure in workplaces and schools. It covers all types of protective devices, including:

* spectacles (plano and prescription)
* goggles
* faceshields
* welding helmets and handshields
* full facepiece respirators

The standard includes descriptions and general requirements, as well as criteria for testing, marking, selection, use and care. Note that it does not apply to hazardous exposure to bloodborne pathogens, X-rays, high-energy particulate radiation, microwaves, high-frequency radiation, lasers, masers, or sports."

Laser protective eyewear must meet Z136.1 standards for laser exposure.

"...The ANSI Z136.1 (2007) standard provides an updated and thorough set of guidelines for implementing a safe laser program. In addition to these changes, the standard covers laser safety program provisions including the duties and responsibilities of the LSO, non-beam hazards, administrative/engineering control measures, definitions, optical density, nominal hazard zone (NHZ), MPEs, accessible emission limit (AEL), bioeffects, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and example calculations."

Cut corners all you want they're your eyes but I've been in this business a long time, you will pay the price. Listen to people who have had ocular damage. There are a ton of posts in the safety section on this issue.

If you are in this hobby part of the cost of the hobby is safety equipment. That's just a fact of the business.

You without a doubt know your stuff

I wouldn't be worried about the IR output from a lower powered green like the DX true 30mw.

IR diverges so fast out of the green optics that after 2-3 feet it can't do anything, and the output of IR from these lasers is <5mw.

I read in the safety section aleready, but I was wondering if i "hit the jackpot" or something when i found this site. Maybe i knew about a good site you guys didnt? apearantly not.
I really dont want to screw up my eyes no, but several hundred $ just for some goggles- seems like a ripoff to me

I really wouldn't skimp out when it came to my eyes. I'm normally a cheapskate and a tightarse (I <3 DealExtreme) but I would be prepared to pay for the best possible protection. I might be going for some of those greyish brown goggles, they offer protection for virtually everything
