I'M NEW TO THE FOURM AND WOULD LIKE TO SAY HI TO EVERYONE! AND WAS WONDERING IF ANYBODY WAS FAMILIAR WITH THE RADIO SHACK 5mw GREENIE HTTP://WWW.RADIOSHACK.COM. I'M GONNA BUY IT TOMORROW FOR $50.00 AT MY LOCAL STORE (NO WAIT AND IF IT SUCKS I CAN RETURN IT IN 5 MIN.) AND WAS WONDERING IF A 5mw CAN BURST A BALLOON (GUY AT STORE TOLD ME IT COULD BREAK BLACK ONES) AND IF IT COULD BE MODDED (REMOVING IR LENS OR SCREWING WITH THE INSIDE) I'LL LET YOU GUYS (AND GALS) KNOW HOW IT FAIRS TOMORROW.

JSP -- Welcome to the forum. While you're waiting for tomorrow, do some searches and reading about low powered pointers and modding the Radio Shack pointer. Tons of info already here.

umm, you can pot mod the laser "search the forums for what that is" ; but that takes the lifetime of the laser down ALLOT. I believe that a 5mW greenie would not be able to pop a black balloon. and just wondering, whats up with the random picture in this post?

also do you think the e2 LITHIUM AAA batt. would make a difference in power...also about the pot mod and life of laser.....they have a 30 day return policy. so basically if i break it i get a new one in like 10 min and if i really wanted to screw with radioshack i could go every 29 days and get a new one.

yea, they do make a difference in power. the only problem is that they are EXPENSIVE. and i guess technically you could. lol ;D

If you break it by modifying it you can't return it. Of course they might not be able to tell so that opens up possibilities

now my only question is.....what i really want is a burner....but of course i am low on cash and really just want a greenie now! i can remember about 15 years ago i saved up for my 1st pointer...it was like 80 bucks and was heavy and big and it still burns me when i wait in line at walgreens and see a laser that is fifty times better for like 2 bucks...now for 50 bucks i can get a low powered greenie...which i have the $ now. it will be cool to play around with but how much do i really need for a cool burner. cauz after about 4 hrs, and like 15 bucks worth of e2 batts. i'm gonna want to add a couple hundred mw and really pop my modern lazing cherry. and i know that my 5mw laser is gonna be in a quarter toy machine in a couple years....and ive spent hours on this forum looking...and looking so when i get a couple hundred dollars together what co. do you guys reccommend for a noobie, something that burns....but is reliable cauz i'd rather pay double than wait a month for DX and possibily get something weak compared to my 5mw. also the R.S. 5mw..if i take the IR filter off....is there even a possibility of burning anything other than my eyeballs? :-?

Taking the IR filter off the RS green won't accomplish much. You won't be getting much IR and the IR will be too poorly focused to burn things unless they are extremely close.

If you want to spend $200+ for a good burner you should just buy an X-series from nova. Those are more reliable than dx and you will have trouble finding anything cheaper. An x-125 should light matches/pop balloons/melt plastic.

ok so i tool the RS greenie apart....very simple to do since everything is threded rather than glued, ect... well not really i couldn't get the driver/ect out faqr enough to do a pot mod...so i went online and only found one way to get it apart (i don't think they make them that way anymore, mine was made jan 2008 and the one modded on youtube was an older one) well long storie short i decided to just give up on it since breaking it to the point i cant return it was not something i wanted to do since is is a 53.00 5mw. well put it all back together, plastic ring...metal ring batts and cap and......................i'm leaving now to return it bc it no longer works. well unless someone has a tip on very gently removing the laser unit from the host i don't think i'm gonna try to mod it since i dont really think it will improve the performance very much anywase. guess i'm just gonna hafto wait for my nova!

yea, good choice : P im personally thinking of getting a X100 instead of a X75. what exactly can a x100 do that a x75 cant?

from all the reading ive been doing over the last few months not much the 75 seems to be at least 90mw and up to 100mw ... and the 100 is @ 120mw....so instead of popping a balloon in 1 sec u can pop it in 1.3 sec...fom pics the 100 doesn't seem to be ant brighter...but with any good laser if you have the cash to get the better one...well get it. i'm getting the 75 and using the cash saved to get an optics kit. also anyone who wants a good pointer thr RS 5mw is fine....and +++++ i broke mine the same day i got it...and got a 2nd one free...all in the same day...its worth the price just for that 90 day exchange
