Hello everyone, I'm a complete newb to all of this kinda stuff...

I just want to buy a laser that can pop balloons, light matches and burn other stuff.

So, does anyone know where I can find a laser for sale that is under $75 and can burn stuff?

Also, can 50 mW burn stuff, or does it have to be higher then that?

Any recommendations would be great. :)

:thanks:

" looks for a laser that burns"

Is that your Indian name? :D

Read the Buy/Sell/Trade board and some of the stickies in the various boards You may find that there is more to lasers than you currently realize.

Welcome

lol, yeah. Well I kinda just want it to burn stuff and pop balloons and shin it at things, certainly not at people or animals. I won't go around starting big fires. :p

is it actually considered a weapon?

as soon as you cross over from a simple pointing device that is incapable of inflicting injury, yes.

What ever happened to light shows, optical experiments and using lasers for applications other than burning things.??

I'm not ragging on you, it's just the overall trend.

you can pop balloons with a jack knife or needle, and bic sells a nice lighter for burning.

It's just far wiser to learn the ropes with a lower power laser that cannot injure people.

I'm starting to agree more and more with Wayne, burning things with a laser gets boring very fast, and that kind of power is a dangerous thing, so it should be treated as a weapon, yes.

I don't want to just burn things... And I would certainly not be going around pointing the laser at people.

I do have a couple of small reed laser pointer for my cat, I like those but it's nothing like one of those high powered ones.

what do you mean by learning the ropes?

I'd suggest you go with something along the lines of a 100mW green, it'll burn things and due too the green colour (532nm) it's at the peak point at which our eyes are most sensitive so it will be extremely bright.

Check out rayfoss.com or o-like.com.

I REALLY REALLY recommend you get a set of protective goggles, prove everyone here that thinks your just kid, by buying a pair of these and showing your a mature adult.

This laser will blind your eyes as quickly as you can turn it on, even reflections of shiny surfaces will cause blind spots which will be with you for the REST OF YOUR LIFE.

If you feel that you can take on this kind of responsibility, knowing that it can effect you for the next 60+ years, by all means purchase a laser, but think about what your doing first as they are not toy.

okay, thankyou for this helpful advice. I still want to buy one, and definetly those protective goggles.

and just out of curiosity, has anyone on this forum gone blind in parts of their eyes?

thanks.

yikes...

So, I read the green laser guide. I reall like it. :D

So, just to make sure of some thing...

it is illegal to ship a 100mW laser to Canada from the USA?

and you can see the green beem in the daytime if it's 100mW?

Thanks fro all of the help so far everyone, and sorry if this is off topic... :/ I wouldn't mind if somoen ended up deleting this thread because it's so off topic, I think. :p

1. No. There are no restrictions for lasers in Canada. You can import whatever laser you want. But, most lasers you order online will be coming from China.

2. A 100mW green beam will be slightly visible during the day, and only if there is smoke/fog/ or particles in the air to show the beam.

I recommend getting a 200mW Red laser for about $50 first. (and $15 safety glasses)
Then you can get a 100mW Green laser for about $75. (and $30 safety glasses)
Once you have those colors, your next step is to get a bluray for about $100.

From what I know already and i myself am a newbie. anything over 5mW is illegal but there are ways around it like ordering parts and making one. Also a couple of companies can get them past, ordered a 100mW laser from rayfoss after reading many good reviews about the site, people have received their lasers here in the U.S.:yh:
Also my laser cost 80 dollars including shipping. Pretty good price

I hope that's true!

I still need to convince my dad to let me get one of these, I want one so badly. haha... I'm waiting for the perfect moment. :D

Also, I've read a lot of bad reveiws about rayfoss with bad lasers and stuff...

Thanks again.
