Wait until later next week and see if you get a response. It's Chinese New Year. The entire region shuts down.

Any chance that customs would have snagged it?

No. You would notice customs opened the parcel. No matter which country you are, you would see it was opened with a cutter and there would be special customs tape and stickers around it.

I also don´t think it got stolen on the way to him. A thief wouldn´t open the parcel and close it again that way you wouldn´t notice it. This is to much time and efford. He would simply take the whole package with the content in it.

There are thiefs working in the postal too ive read many stories of empty boxes/packages coming its not the hardest thing to open up parcels with a sharp knife and carefully tape it over and make it look unopened or something.. but they should take responsibility for this no matter what since something must happend in transit. And customs could also have opened it up and thrown the laser to garbage its also a possibility they dont have to leave a note or whatever if its strictly forbidden importing high power lasers to that country.

I´ve been working for such a company for a while some time ago. There are thousands of parcels comming through your hands hour by hour and you have no time for such things. This is simple piecework and there are always ppl around you watching you how fast you are working. The only person who theoretically can do this is the postman bringing the packages. But again they are mostly also under big pressure and have no time to tape it that way you will not notice it got opened.

I´m also aware of these stories and also heard about bricks in parcels or money stolen from letters, but seriously who would do so much efford to steal a $15 flashlight, tape the parcel back and send it further?

If ther would be someone do this, he would simply steal the entire package because this is going much faster than taping it back and letting it appear like untouched.

At least in the company I worked for this was simply impossible.

UPDATE:
Max finally got back to me (which I think was in response to an e-mail I sent to the company handling his payments). He said that while he thinks it is unlikely his company would send an empty box due to weight differences in packages, he trusts me since i ordered from them once before and will send me another laser.

Let's see if I get another one. If so, I may keep my faith in this place. I was pretty happy during my first order.

Living in Korea, I've had Koreans tell me the same thing (bricks in the mail). Some even told me never to order from China.

You would be suprised how many packages gets stolen around the world at those sorting facilities people are just dishonest today. Because if lazerer claims they sent not a empty box then its kinda obvious something happend on the way... and they xray all packs i think so its not too hard if someone saw a laser and perhaps wanted it...

I assure you the post comapnies do not xray each parcel and even do not have such equipment there. To use xrays you must fullfill strong restrictions and they don´t get the permission to use such equipment. In the other hand this would also violate postal privacy. So the only ones who are using xrays and are permitted to are the customs.

And just btw. Max (lazerer) didn´t claim but just said he doesn´t think his company would send an empty box. That´s a huge difference because he knows himself $hit can happen and even if this is most likely not going to happen it could happened.

So i still stand for a thief wouldn´d bother and spend so much time and effort to take it out and to make it look like it didn´t got opened.

Stealing something in general takes 1-2 secounds. Repacking about 1-2 minutes but letting a package to look like it didn´t got opened most likely more than 10 minutes.

So you seriously think a thief would bother about spending so much time and risk to be catched at work while he is trying to make it look like being unopened?

He would simply take the entire box, take the laser out and throw the empty box away as fast as he can.

The same happens every day with briefcases. (happened to me last x-mas)

The thiefs are stealing them, taking your money and throwing the briefcase away but not going to put it back in your pocket.

I dont know how a thiefs mind work all im sayin its not too uncommon packages getting mysteriously lost on the way in transit and you can only guess what might have happend, im curious too what happend we will never know but we cant rule out the possibility either that someone took be it customs, thief that works there or whatever.

Usually customs will only get suspicious if there is a whole bunches of certain products that probably weren't properly declared. They may have some sort of scanners for detecting batteries or tubes and stuff, but they're designed to be automated and usually shippers will break the product up in to pieces to prevent detection.

If it got "lost" it was probably in Asia. Still, there's rarely any incentive to steal this kind of stuff. They're not really worth much, and hard to sell. Plus the person would need intimate knowledge of what is inside before bothering. It's like stealing from a house or a car: thieves don't bother unless they know they can find something worth the risk of breaking in and stealing.

I once ordered a very expensive gun replica for my movie making hobby. It was from the uk
When it came, the postman asked why my package was so light so i opened it and there was nothing inside!! I checked uk law, it was fine for imitation firearms back then, i checked for tampering too. Only managed to see a thin cut along a side but covered up by tape. The website assured me that it was shipped and had no idea what happeden. I had bought from them before so they offered a refund. Cant remember how much.
Only explanation is the postman. Or someone else in the middle.
I dont know how it works in your country but sometimes the post man is the thief. They are basically walking round the city with your parcel...theyve got more than 10 minutes to tamper:(
Anyway, hope you get it all sorted :)
