Very much a laser newbie, and am looking for advise.

I'm interested in purchasing a 55mW 532nm green laser pointer, and after looking around, I've found these two:

https://www.optotronics.com/proddetail.php?prod=Opto55

and

Green Laser Pointers : Dragon Lasers
(the viper 55mW version)

Are these two companies currently considered credible? And if so, which would be the better pick?

The dragon one is more expensive than the optotronics, but I don't mind as long as the quality warrants it. Or are they both overpriced junk?

Any advise would be greatly appreciated!

Also, because I have looked around some and seen it come up a lot: yes, I am getting safety goggles along with the laser pointer and will exercise safety around myself and others.

I myself have not purchased from either one of them but yes they are considered credible. If you are outside the U.S. it doesn't matter, if you are inside the U.S. You are better off buying from Optotronics, it will arive fast. Dragon Lasers are on the FDA import alert list but they still get though ok, but better to have fast shipping and not worry about customs.

Where are you located? If in the US, buy from optotronics as they're local. Both companies are known and credible and sell good stuff.

Both reputable companies - I personally prefer the pointers Dragon Lasers sells (Produced by CNI). That said, I haven't had one of Optotronics pointers - I've had cheaper ones in the same host and have never been a huge fan of that host - The pointers from Optotronics may be better than the cheap ones I've had though. Several people here have them - someone else may be along to comment on that.

Quality of the DL pointer is great - last time I had one at least. Wasn't from DL, but it was produced by CNI just like what DL has for sale.

Seconded on what Alan and Razako said above.

I can't trust that Optotronics laser, primarily because of that host. From what I've seen, lasers in that host have a driver with poor support, which means every time you press the button you bend the diode pins. This is very bad. Dragonlasers is a great company, I'd recommend them over Optotronics any day.

Thanks for all the info!

I think I'll take my risks with customs, and go with Dragon Lasers. Looking forward to it!

As far Optotronics pen host looking similar to the cheapie ebay, it really ends when you pic one and feel it in your hand. You can feel the heavier weight and a solid feeling. As what Sta said about the drivers flex support, when I press the button on mine it feels well supported without the flex you feel on the cheapie's. The hosts even seem to be made a bit thicker and from curiousity iv'e tried some ebay pens back half on mine and the thread standards are different.
I can't compare to Dragon lasers as I don't have one but if your in the US as others said it will come in 2 days and tech support is pretty much instant.
